I am trying to move away from picture frames for a while, so how about one of these:

About 10 years ago, a staff member brought in something that no one had ever seen before. It was small, beautifully formed and changed our perception on what were dull items essential for the operation of your PC.
Naturally we started selling them right away!
What was it?

The original Microsoft IntelliMouse Explorer (only just retired mine after 10 years)
I think it must be a mouse.
Although a mouse isn't entirely essential for the use of a PC if you know all the keyboard shortcuts. But there will be plenty of programs which will be hindered without a mouse. You can surf the web using just the keyboard, but damn it's tedious tabbing through links until you get to the one you want to "click".
I'm gonn abe different from all the other answers, A tft lcd monitor. :D
Im going to go with a Shuttle case :D
entertaining answers so far :D
Sounds like a mouse to me :) .
Its got to be an optical mouse as they were introduced in 1999.

optical keyboard and optical mouse
I think it was a TFT flat panel monitor. Compared to the CRTs they were small, and comparatively beautifully formed! Can't use your PC without it, though CRTs weren't that dull, there were good ones and bad ones. Still, that's my guess.
Meh, I'm going with the flow, sign me up for an Optical Mouse
opitical mouse here as well

I'm just going to be a sheep and copy everyone else and say a Microsoft IntelliMouse Explorer as it was released in 1999 and seems to be one of the main optical mice from around then.
If I were to win, could I get a picture frame? I know that may seem silly...just I have more use for one of them...the front bay thing wouldn't be passed over mind. :)

optical mouse is my guess.
I regret my given answer now... after re-reading the question. Oh well. GL
Optical mouse any one ?
( This is not a question but an answer as I was the only one to answer another comp right but didnt win )
optical mouse is the only logical thing i can think off, both corded and cordless :D
Optical mouse. Only small thing I can think of
I'll go with the optical mouse too :).

How true :)
But wasn't essential for the operation of your PC :thumb:
Well technically you can use a computer with just the keyboard. It'd just hinder an awful lot of programs. You can surf the web using just the keyboard if you know all the keyboard shortcuts, but tabbing through links until you highlight the one you want to "click" on would be very tedious.

technicallly neither is a mouse :thumb:

tell that to average joe, who doesn't know use keyboard short cuts :p
I'm gonna say Optical mouse aswell :)
Y'know what - I think it's a condom.
Just kidding - stick with my actual answer of a mouse.

The question is 'essential to the operation' not 'essential to the crashing'. ;) :p
There was only two of you who got close... but one was much closer than the other :)
Diaby Does Gallas
24-08-10, 22:09
Well the fact it hastook so long to give a winner must mean it is the optical mouse, any other answer only has 1 or 2 people going for it, and that is why it has took so long!
Diaby Does Gallas

That was caused by using a Tiny PC not the OS :thumb:

well what was it then?
Brainiac361
24-08-10, 22:12
looking through. 2 people guessed case.
one person could be closer, and it was a shuttle case?
But a case isn't actually essential either.
Brainiac361
24-08-10, 22:15
suppose so?
i know it wasnt the mouse though, or to be precise, optical moouse!

24-08-10, 22:15
Why is it taking so long for them to say, the suspense is killing me?
Heat sink innit lol :D 2 ppl guessed that.
Heat sink innit lol :D 2 ppl guessed that.
kind of essential - without it ain't gonna last long :clap
You can blame Robin for this one as it was him who walked into my office and said 'Look at this, its really cool' :D
It was a Thermaltake Golden Orb for a FCPGA CPU and we had seen nothing like it!
zaz was in the right area, but fullfatmilk was much closer!

depends if you live in the arctic or not
Well done fullfatmilk :D
I think I still have an old zalman flower around here somewhere lol
So was it a heatsink? Heatsinks were around before 2000
So were mice...
Zalman Flower coolers were awesome.

back of the net :D, glad I had a little think before i put in an answer
I remember looking at those heatsinks back in the day and thinking how cool they looked ........ ba dum tish :coat
Well done, I had one of them, it was a great cooler.
I had the silver orb for AMD when it was released... had to Dremmel it like crazy to get it to fit onto a KT7
Gunslinger
24-08-10, 22:39
well done, i was thinking some sort of cooler, but couldnt narrow down a point in time when they made a big advance like that, which folks would not have seen before, so went with the cordless mouse option, because it was around that time period i think logitech came out with them
anyway, well done Fullfatmilk .... and Aria, cool little comp :)

never actually had the orb myself , can't remember if it was because it cost too much or didn't perform that well with the athlon cpu's
think I had a Global WIN FOP32 or fop38 instead though probably not the 38 as my hearing is fine
What was the Globalwin one that had a Delta fan on it that sounded like jet engine...
Edit: the CAK38! hilarious name and equally hilarious noise. I loved it - 6000RPM fan that was faster than the 5400 RPM Hard Drives of the time :D

Lol image putting in 10 of those in a CM dominator 2 advanced :D

24-08-10, 23:23
lol just found in my old reciepts that I had the GlobalWin FOP32-1 and I paid £14.10 for it from 'the overclocking store'
Lol image putting in 10 of those in a CM dominator 2 advanced :D
I seem to recall it was all the rage back then to put as many fans holes in the side panel as possible with a jigsaw and fill them with 80mm deltas, great cooling but just a touch on the noisy side but some people did actually do this
Oh well, it was a bit like picking a piece of straw from a pile of straw to narrow it down to one, so i generalised.
Well done fullfatmilk on yet another win lmao :D
