View Full Version : Any new Nvidia cards on the Horizon?
I've read a few rumours on the net that nvidia might be phasing out the gtx 470 and possibly replacing it with another card based on the gf 104 core or maybe even a newer one
Basically i want to update my GTX 275 but i dont think the GTX 460 is a big enough jump and the 470 is on the gf 100 core which is hot and power hungry. And i want to stay nvidia
So was just wondering your thoughts or if thers anyone here that knows anything?

GTS 450 is coming soon I think.
A GTX 475/470 Revision 2 is coming soon too apparently based of the GF104 core.

I'd wait for the " GTX 475/470 Revision 2" to come out before upgrading from a 275 :thumb:
I expect 500 series just after xmas done on 28nm

Unlikely I suspect. It'll be at the very least 12 months, probably 18 months (i.e. Xmas 2011) until Fermi's successor comes out. AMD are supposedly releasing over 12 months later than the HD5xxx series first came out, and this is one of the fastest product cycle replacements in recent years. I suspect we'll see a GTX475 just in time for Chrismas this year; nVidia are more focussed on delivering the cheap low/low-medium end parts atm, as they are the biggest sellers.
My advice to the OP is just to wait atm, there's nothing spectacular worth spending your cash on atm.

remember fermi was late by 6 months, soon as 28nm is ready to roll expect fermi to get to the shrink asap, doubtful they will allow ati lead another 6 month with 6000 series been unchallenged.
ATi have the 6 series out in Oct/Nov and the 7 series probably September next year so they can squeeze a Q3 launch.
As ATi has the TSMC and Global foundries making 28nm whereas Nvidia currently just has the TSMC, i think ATi will have the upper hand again.
Nvidia was 6 months late to the party so NO way are they gonna release a 5 series so quick, they need to roll out the low end fermi first.
fermi's late release wont have any impact on the 500s coming out, if anything it will make them make sure its smooth than anything.
i still think the 580s will be out for easter tbh.

Thing is, AMD is releasing "Southern Islands" as a stop-gap between the current generation and the planned 28nm "Northern Islands". 28nm nodes for GPUs are still some time away from being perfected to the point of production-worthy. I can't see how nVidia can release something so quickly, because as El Wayneo pointed out, they still have an incomplete range for their current generation. I'd like to think they can release something faster and on a smaller die for lower costs/less heat, but I just can't see it happening when they've just made the transition to 40nm.

Yes everything got messed up cause 32nm was cancelled, GF is still while away from 28nm, hence reason why AMD is still having use TSMC for 28nm. TSMC canned 32nm, so they could focus fully on 28nm. What tends to happen before brand new series is one of the mid range cards is tested on the said process, remember the 4770 was first 40nm test card for ATI. As you pointed out the 6000 series is just a stop gap for ATI they will be doing 7000 series ASAP on 28nm too, i expect the 6000 series come out on 40nm then for them test 6770? maybe on 28nm some months later, if all is well then go into full production on 7000 series on 28nm. Nvidia will want to get the fermi on 28nm ASAP too, so expect them to release a 400 series done on test 28nm process so they can perfect the process for the 500 series. I would expect maybe test card around christmas? then maybe may 2011 brand new series from Nvidia.
But they (Nvidia) don't even have a 28nm wafer that works, no one does, so its at least 4 months away for 28nm, as in it takes 4 months to get a working viable product form the first wafer.
