That was the same we had but two years ago. It's still just as bad. :P
Apparently things such as North Bridges are still relevant as are IDE cables too apparently. Granted a lot of the computers that an engineer will come across will utilise but seriously... Aren't they meant to be teaching us about current and future technologies?

I get bored of demoing that I can send an email and spell check a document so instead I come on here during my IT lessons :p
I love the way on the new curriculm they refer to the CPU as a "arithmetic and logic unit". It threw me completely, never once have I ever heard anyone on here or experts for that matter refer to the CPU as that.
ALU is a bit of an oldschool term, not heard that for a while :).
It's basically incorrect to describe a CPU as an ALU. All CPUs contain (at least one) ALU, however so do graphics cards. And modern CPUs do a lot of stuff besides what a traditional ALU would do, e.g. they have internal (cache) memory, I/O connections, etc etc.

I've had some odd stuff too, can't remember it off the top of my head but it was stuff like blue-ray, WTF is blue-ray? All I've heard of is blu-ray ;)
We're not allowed to watch the teacher even open up a computer and see what's inside and how it's all put together as it's a health and safety risk!
They insisted we call the CPU an ALU at GCSE, this was 10 years ago. No idea why because as andyn says, it's not 100% accurate!

GCSE's are being taken a year or two early now for some strange reason. A friend of mine who is in year 10 (best friends sister, don't get ideas!) has taken some of her exams already.
Yep, you take some exams in year 10 now too, they're spread across the 2 year course

I did a few reviews for Vortez as I was friends with the guy who owns it. I also did some coding for him. IIRC Andy from eTeknix then asked for me to redesign his site, then after that he asked if I could write some reviews. So now I get sent all the latest stuff and get to keep them :) It's not all how its cracked out to be though, it is hard work with all the photography and testing etc. The reviews themselves are very time consuming so often difficult to fit them in around 2 full time jobs.

Good work there mate, and you got me work experience! :D

I have loads of free time, even with GCSEs and work on Saturdays, so if you ever need some help with reviews, I'm always here :D I'll do a very thorough job, and I get very good grades at school so needn't worry about grammar, spelling and professionalism

my cousin did 2 gcse last year and he is only 14 now but i know he was one of only a handful in his school to do this.

Need a full stop there. :p
Be quiet little boy, after all you are a cowboy. ;)
GCSE's are being taken a year or two early now for some strange reason. A friend of mine who is in year 10 (best friends sister, don't get ideas!) has taken some of her exams already.
back at school we did our IT GCSE in Year 9, the thinking is to get the easy ones done earlier so you can focus on the more difficult ones in more detail and time.

Only peeps in NI who have done gcses early without being asked to (I was but principle said no...) would be people who went to a bunscoil which is Irish primary school where they speak Irish and they do a GCSE in Irish if they go into a Irish secondary school early
I wish I did GCSEs to be honest, I do the International Baccalaureate and ahve done since Year 7. They claim that it not only teaches you knowledge but also how to be a 'better' person. Yet to me I see it as quadrupling your workload instead.
CPU's have an ALU, they aren't one though, as AndyN states.
That reminds me, I did CPU architecture, FML.

Did you do that at uni or college?
Still not a clue what hardware stuff you do at college/uni tbh :/

Little I hear, I know a guy doing programming in uni and he knows very little at hardware, then again he's not doing a hardware course so...
Also, trentspc, in a maths exam I was in the top 5% in Northern Ireland and my teacher said for all you know you could've been the top ;)

Nice one, but if you were really good at maths you might think about what 5% of Northern Ireland Y10 students who took maths exams is.
Ahh, well I did the maths challenge which is supposed to be the whole of the UK and I got in the top 500 for English year 10, and if I was in year 11 I would have been in top 500 for that too
And I could have been the top in year 10 and 11 I guess

IB is a monster course.. Much harder than GCSE's imo.
And as far as the year 10/11 thing goes, isn't it up to the school/exam board? One school around here does all exams in Year 11. Another one does them all in Year 10 and starts A-Levels (actual course and/or prep depending on the subject) in Year 11 to give students more time to spend on A-Levels
Yeah, I know a load of people who did the Maths challenge (Almost all Asian :ninja:) so good job getting a Gold award in that as I only know one other person who did.
I feel like this topic has gone wildly off the tracks though, maybe the last few posts should be moved to a new topic.
We did IB instead of GCSE Maths at school for some reason.
At the start of the IB course we did that challenge thing and I'm fairly sure I was 11th in the country!

Well I actually got like 2 above a gold award, I got 106 points and here's the scoring;
Certificates
Bronze 50
Silver 62
Gold 77
Kangaroo
Grey 77 (Year 9 top 5500 get that)
Pink 87 (Year 10 top 5500 get that)
Olympiads (The next stage or something)
Cayley 90 (Year 9 top 500 get that)
Hamilton 96 (Year 10 top 500 get that)
Maclaurin 101 (Year 11 top 500 get that)
So yeahh.. pretty chuffed xD
So far I've failed to see the benefit of the IB system but from past students it really really helps you when you get to University and can basically Bulldoze your way though.

So you did just IB Maths instead of the whole course? How did you get graded on it?
Did you do it last year or something? Cause there's only one specific date when you can did it and you don't get told exact positions till after the 'Olympiad', which hasn't been done yet..

Never done Maths Challenge, last time I got asked was last year I think. Haven't heard anything of it since.
I'm a Maths student at Uni. Some modules are interesting and others are boring and confusing (I'm looking at you probability). Starting with Matlab in 2 weeks.
What's the benefits of doing the maths challange?
If there's any good ones I might do it next year

You get a nice certificate and ummm... recognition. This is the reason I didn't do it, I had no real motivation and didn't feel I needed to prove my abilities to anyone.

I guess it could look good on a CV.. but they don't carry any UCAS points or anything like that.. there's only one, the UKMT UK Maths Challenge, and the top set in maths at our school does it every year..

One of the worst jobs to have at parties. It seems everyone has a bad back. At my wedding, i was stood at the urinal and a guest came and stood next to me and asked me to look at his back!
It also makes me think this is one of the only jobs that this would happen. You wouldn't go up to a car salesman at a party and ask him to test drive your car and give you a valuation!
Im a full time Modern Warfare 3 Player :)

I am unemployed and sort of look after my mother. She can do quite a bit on her own but does get help from me who still lives at home with her, my sister who lives not far away and a few other people i.e care people at night and some support once a week for a few hours.
Wouldn't mind though if someone would actually give me a job or at least a chance to prove myself with a job offer should i be good enough. Sure being at home means i can spend a few hours job hunting online and in local news papers then the rest gaming and such but after the first few months it looses it's appeal becoming boring.
~6 Months on JSA, lost all interest in gaming in November, wish someone would just give me a chance.
This is actually really eye-opening and shocking the amount of people that are unemployed! :surprised:
