View Full Version : bay bidding
I know its not realy the place to ask but lots here use the bay so i will.
The mrs seems to be being outbid time and again on items from the same seller in unusual circumstances.
She will find the item she is after, always a no-reserve 99p start, she will be the first bidder and enter her maximum price.
Then, magically, she is automatically outbid above her maximum price by a private identity bidders first bid.
I dont understand how this happens, certainly not come across it myself in 6/7 years, any ideas ?
Sounds like seller has some kind automatic bidder set, so when someone bids it auto bids for them to make price higher.
ebay snipe is a good tool-http://reviews.ebay.co.uk/Snipe-eBay-Auctions-Last-Second-Sniping-to-Win-Bids_W0QQugidZ10000000002985486

Isn't that breaching their T&Cs ? seen a man on the News who was sent to court for doing that

that's right but people still do it thinking they can get away with it.

If it's happening it's called Shill buiding and it's ilegal in the UK.
As stated in a post above someone has been prosecuted this year for doing it.
As for bidding on items, I nearly always bid in the last 10 seconds, that way doesn't give anybody (or anything..) a chance to outbid me.
I nearly always use odd figures like £10.08 because the 8p can mean the difference between a win and a loss.
Bidding techniques mentioned arent new, if you really want something they are the way to maximise your chances, but in my mrs case, thats not always convenient because of other commitments so she puts in a max bid at the start (or whenever she finds it) and leaves it at that.
Not ideal, but still doesnt explain how she can be first bidder and then be immediately outbid, however long the auction has been on - sometimes days with no bids, too coincidental to be someone else bidding at exact same time.

I also bid in the last few seconds, i'll patiently watch an item and have 2 tabs open one with a bid in place ready to confirm. Its a good idea to bid a few pence over i normally go £10.01 £20.05 etc.
