At some point in the next six months I am really going to have to re-build my backup server. It currently still uses IDE drives and is held inside an old coolermaster atc case.

The case is still in good condition so with a bit of a mod job and a bit of paint I could keep it. The only problem is space for hard drives.

I have looked at getting a new case for the job such as the fractal R2 but first I want to see what I could do with what I have.

I decided the best plan is modding the one I have. I have seen people running phase setups who have managed to join this case to another one underneath to give it some extra room.

I could do this and use the space for hard drives.

I have done a fair bit of modding and am OK at it but I'm not too confident with what would be cutting a case in half. Just need a bit of advice really on the following.

1. Where could I pick up a second case to demolish for very little cost?

2. Any jigsaws anybody can recommend for the job?

3. Rails for storing hard drives. Should I make them, pick up a few old cases etc?

4. Joining them together. What would be the best way, bolts, welds, pop rivets etc...

5. Cooling. Needs to be quiet and efficient. Any recommendations?

6. Hardware. What would people recommend for a server. Remember I want to keep this low cost. I want a separate boot drive from storage drives. Must have 5 1Tb drives to start + boot drive and room for expansion.

Any advice on the above or general advice appreciated.

I am also considering building a case from scratch for the job. I don't have much equipment so this could be costly, ie I would probably need a sheet metal bender and a lot of new tools. Anyone done this. Could this work better?

you could prolly build a case from sheet metal/ acyrillic a couple of lian li HDD bays with fans etc if you have the tools or know where to get them go for it. if you know a workshop local which can deal with metals it wouldnt be too expensive to ask them to do a few bends and drill a few screw holes here and there

I've probably got 3 or 4 old cases you'd be welcome to pick up and rip apart if you're ever over Leicester way :)

Can post pics if interested.
