View Full Version : Running Virtual PC in a Virtual PC
I thought we could run a virtual machine in a virtual machine. I tried to run a Ms Virtual PC in a Ms Virtual PC and got the following error message:
"Virtual PC will not run one virtual machine within another"
Can we do this with other virtualization software, e.g. vmware, Virtual Box, Parallel, etc.?

I don't see why not, I've diaper in on a diaper in session who was foaled in on TS... Completely different I know but if thts possible then I can see why your having a problem. Maybe install a different client from the first? Can I ask though... Why would you want to run a vm on a vm on a machine? :s

Thanks Andy... Just wish to test if it works or not.
By the way, I wish to run an EXE file but it is detected as virus/trojan. So, I wish to run it in a virtual machine with no anti-virus software. After running the EXE and retrieving the information I will destroy the virtual machine. Just worried whether the "virus/trojan" will be passed to the host machine.
i'm pretty sure this works with virtual box.
so you could try virtual box, stick ubuntu on it, then run virtual box from within ubuntu
Just tested with Virtual Box. Virtual machine created by Virtual Box did not run successfully in Ms Virtual PC machine.

Try vmware.
I've used a number of times and it gets the job done.
You you would install windows server 08 64bit and use that to run virtual machines also.
I'd recommend using VMware too. but wouldn't it be very slow running vpc in vpc? baring in mind it only uses 1 core? VM ware however uses 2+cores.

If that's all you want to do then Sandboxie can do what you want...

Free and very much light-weight in comparison to installing another VM inside an existing VM. Perhaps run sandboxie inside the existing VM with that EXE so you still have another "wall" between it and the host.
this sounds like an idea for Inception 2! LOL
