View Full Version : Disconnected playing online - PC Upgrade
Hello, our home system is Intel Core2 Quad 2.83Ghz (Corsair H-50 cooler) with 4GB DDR2 800Mhz RAM a Nvidia GTX260 1GB video card. Our 1st HDD is a Crucial 128GB SSD and we have a 1TB normal drive, we're running Windows 7 64-bit Home.
The computer functions perfectly well for Microsoft Word and the internet, however when my son is playing his on-line games he gets disconnected back to the login screen when a lot is "going on". The technical support line have said that the PC "cannot keep up with the information coming from the game server". We've been told that we need to upgrade the motherboard, processor and ram but that the graphics card should still be perfectly fine.
Can anyone recommend a motherboard, processor and ram which would be an upgrade for what we currently have? I don't really want to spend much more than £400 if possible. Also is 4GB now the minimum for Windows, should I get 6 or more?
Thanks in advance
The game logs you out you mean back to the login screen?
Sounds like its a internet problem dropped connected slight lag, doubt it's anything do with your current cpu as it's plenty fast enough.
the technical support line whom i spoke to earlier said that it was the computer speed that was the issue as when he is disconnected he can log right back in again. but when a lot happens on the screen he gets disconnected again.
So is it the i5 or i7 or what is an upgrade for the core2 quad?

Don't listen to that tech support guy - thats a very capable machine you have there.

serious lol ok what game was his playing actually nevermind the 460 and that cpu would run anything.
What internet speed do you have?
Albeit a very capable gpu it might not cope with extreme settings on his game check ingame settings incase they are all on maximum.
Secondly heat is a possible issues make sure your case and all parts are relatively clean (air compressor).
it is possible their is an issue with the gpu but not the rest of the stuff that tech guy should be shot.

sorry but are you making this all up? as if that tech support guy said that... tell him to go f@*^ himself :D
ok, first of what game are you playing (and settings) and secondly what psu have you got. its either the psu or a driver issue. (most likely)

That cpu is more than enough for games and so is the RAM. sounds like a other issue tho
Its not a PSU problem either, physically the PC is fine.
Maybe running a virus scan might be an idea?

It sounds more of a network connection problem as if it was a hardware problem it would not go back to the login screen,
it could be a firewall problem, might be that the ping of the server you are connecting to is to high aswelll,
also are you using a wireless router to connect to the internet as the router might needed the ports fowarding,
please you the link below to test the speed of your internet connection speed.

Just saw that you are using a q9550 cpu thats more than enough for today's games,
I had a q9450 and that would run any game i threw at including crysis perfectly fine which is one of if not the most demanding games available.

your system is almost the same as mine only you have a better HDD
I don't find any problems at all with games or anything
this is why I haven't upgraded at all because other than the fact I could say "looks guys I have a i7 yahoooo am up-to-date" that fact remains my pc is more than capable of any of the latest games and anything else I chuck at it too.

now that's an offer :) :thumb:
That line from technical support is gibberish. I'm guessing you got an overheating router from the packet translations required whilst gaming, it resets, loses internet connection and then you return to the login screen of whatever game it is.
Next time you play a game, setup this in the background.
Start>Run>cmd <press enter>
In the black box that pops up type "ping -t www.google.com", that will show internet connectivity and keep running until you press CTRL+C. Now if you play the game, get disconnected, check this screen for a "timeout". If you see some, then the issue is the internet connection, not the machine.

Upgrading the motherboard?! They are talking rubbish. Welcome to the world of tech support by phone! You are usually better asking a friend or asking on forums. What would help is if you tell us more about your computer. Also, what online game is it?
What way is the online gaming PC connected to the internet? Is it by LAN or WiFI? Just a long shot, but if you have an Nvidia chipset based motherboard there was a LAN driver problem that created this very issue a while back. Fixsed by updating your network driver from the motherboard manufacturers website.
Make sure your router is set for UPnP (it will be in the settings somewhere on the router web page) Apart from that we would probably need more information to help you.
