Hi all, here's hoping someone can help...

I've an aging PC, on which the GPU gave up a few weeks ago.

The PC has an old mobo with an AGP slot (Asus K8v Se Deluxe), and I didn't really fancy upgrading the mobo just yet (maybe I should have!). anyway I bought the following GPU from Aria as it seemed a good buy - http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Components/Graphics+Cards/ATI+AGP+Series/Gigabyte+ATI+Radeon+HD+4650+1024MB+DDR2+AGP+Graphi cs+Card+?productId=39302 (though I notice it is now discontinued!)

However, I can't get windows to boot up with it installed - it get's as far as the 'windows loading' screen, then freeze - it's windows XP 32.

The only way I can boot into windows is in safe mode.

I've uninstalled the old GPU drivers and installed the ATI ones that came on the disc supplied with the card, without any joy. I've looked on the gigabyte and the ATI website for alternative drivers, but I can't see any.

I've even gone as far as re-installing windows - but I can still only get it to boot in safe mode. Even tried a clean boot via MSCONFIG - but even then it still freezes at the windows screen !

I've done a bit of googling and I see that a few people have had a problem with this card - has anyone here had any joy with running this card? or can anyone give me any pointers as to what else I can try?

Thanks
Geoff

So? if he has an ageing 250w PSU or something it may have a problem.

I had an ageing 210W dell psu, it'll be fine :)

I suspect it's a driver issue as that's what changes between safe mode and 'non' safe mode.

Thanks for the quick replies guys.

PSU should be fine as it's 600W (recently replaced).

Processor is AMD Athlon 64 3200+

memory is 2GB

Cheers

Sounds like a driver issue to me also.
