I finally decided that the family PC wasn't up to scratch and had to build my own. How is this for a DX10 capable gaming rig?

Core 2 Duo E6600 Processor
Conroe XFIRE-ESATA2 Mobo
Corsair 2GB PC2-6400 RAM
Foxconn Geforce 8800GTS Card
DIAMONDMAX 11 400GB Hard drive
Xilence ATX2.0 480w PSU

Anything glaring that isn't compatible or that I have missed? (Except of couse a monitor, keyboard and such)

yea not bad, not better than mine :P

should have got some Raptors in there and instead of 8800GTS should have got a GTX version.

But all in all not bad :-)

Also you might need some optical drives. :D
If you're going to overclock then get the Arctic Cooler Freezer 7 Pro and you wont even have to worry about CPU temps. http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Components/Fans%2C+Heatsinks%2C+Coolers/Socket+775/+Arctic+Cooling+Freezer+7+PRO?productId=20729

Requirements: Next-Generation Gaming Platform (Crysis, UT 2007, Tabula Rasa and suchlike) So basically a decent processor and DX10 support, as well as space for expansion (When I can afford it!)

Budget: £1000 Earthican Pounds

That PSU is crap. I owned one and it failed to hold up my AMD X2/Radeon X1950XT system at full tilt. Sold it for £20 to a friend who will never max it out with his AMD XP 1500/Radeon 9800 Pro.

And yes, avoid Maxtor. Personally I swear by Western Digital. Avoid the Raptors though; mine is annoyingly loud, and it runs a little hotter than my Caviars. I use it only for games now, since it was too loud for a boot drive. Windows Defender's scheduled scans woke me up and night. No joke.

yeah, raptors are pointless, better off with WD, and as stated, avoid maxtor. as for the PSU this should do nicely http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Components/Power+Supplies/500w+%2B/OCZ+600W+StealthXStream+PSU+?productId=26933

well deserving of the 'stealth' in its name and powerful too.

I would agree Raptors are definitely not worth the money unless they are being used in a high performance server environment, and I will come and slap anyone (Micky ;) ) who says different.

But seriously, they really arent - in every day usage, you wont really notice a difference that makes you think \"I'm so glad I paid 3x the amount of another similar sized drive... It means I can get into windows 1 second quicker, and also produce alot of heat and make much more noise.\"

And yeah, as above.. A better PSU and a few optical drives would go down well :)

It looks like you have gone for decent parts (C2D, Corsair RAM, 8800 vid card etc..) - I would consider getting a better motherboard too. I dont know if going SLI in the future is a consideration for you, but that motherboard only supports ATI Crossfire, and not nVidia SLI. If you stick with your 8800GTS, and want to do dual video cards in the future, you will have to buy 2 new ATI cards to make use of the Crossfire feature.

Are you considering overclocking at all?

:)

So I'll get a different PSU and Hard drive. Can anyone reccomend a good high capactiy Western Digital?

  :P

Well to be honest i have to agree with you all, yes they make so much noise but yea they are kind of fast. But they are a pile of wan* if you stick 2 raptors on Raid 0 because theres no speed diffrence.

You're right, I probably would want to get a second card in the future, mabye in a year or so, so SLI support would be handy! What motherboard do you rekon would fit the Bill? Apparently, Asus Mobo's fit the bill (DDR2, SATA, C2D and Sli all supported, within my price range)

Dual Graphic Card computers still sound like witchcraft to me!

As for overclocking, I've heard much about it but dont really understand it that well. As far as I know, it is delving into the BIOS and altering a components speed above the factory setting (usually requiring additional coolant, due to higher temperatures), and that it is a fantastic way to get additional power out of your rig. How did I do?

Just a little amendment, I can push the budget a little if I need to, I just got £500 from my parents, as its my 18th today!

Alrighty then, revised list:

Core 2 Duo E6600 Processor
Asus P5N32-E SLi Socket 775 ATX Motherboard
Corsair 2GB PC2-6400 C4 XMS2 DDR2 RAM
Foxconn Geforce 8800GTS Graphics Card
Western Digital Caviar 400GB Hard Drive
OCZ 600W StealthXStream PSU
NEC 7170A DVD Drive

With this I'm getting a Saitek Eclipse, a Logitech MX1000 and a ProLite X486S Monitor. I like the look of the Aspire Crusier blue case but I'm still undecided. All in all it fits comfortably around £1000.

Hows that?

One second, what is the difference between these two motherboards?

http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Components/Motherboards/Socket+775+%28Intel%29/Asus+P5N32-E+SLi+Socket+775+ATX+MOTHERBOARD+?productId=25917

What's to stop me getting the cheaper one?

I would seriously reccomend saving the dough on your logitech and getting the saitek GS3200, cheaper, but aria dont stock, ive said they need to before. Its a much better mouse and only £20, a complete steal.

I would have to agree, Logitech are a good make dont get me wrong but there mouse's arnt really that good (well i dont think so) for example i have a G7. Battries run out like every 7hrs and now mine likes to scroll pages all on its own without me telling it to.

Guess it was something blindingly obvious I overlooked
I'll just stick with the Asus P5N32-E SLi Socket 775 ATX then.
So is everything okay? I'm think gonna order the parts soon.
