this seems a bit weird to me
surely a card like this should at least have a 6 pin pci-e socket
anyone know whether this is wrong or not??
The card isn't powerful enough to neet one. It probably gets all the 12v it needs from the PCI-E slot.
The 8600g series uses no where near the power of the 8800's, so no the PCI bus power is all it needs :D
I think the pci expess socket provides somewhere in the region of 75 watts of power so yeah i doubt the 8600's pull that much they require additional power connections.
How much power does an AGP socket give? because i have a less powerful card than the 8600... the X1600. That has a floppy power connector too, you wouldn't think it would draw more but i would assume so.

Well even old Radeon 8900 Pro's needed a floppy power connector to work, AGP slots don't give out much power at all :)

The 8600GT is still a pretty decent card anyway, is yours really bare? mines got like 3 chips and a fan, looks like an empty PCB

yep mine is pretty bare too
and it doesnt matter how powerful it is, its still going to be a big leap from an FX5500...
thx for the help ppl

If you can afford it I would go for something like this

They reckon when DX10 games come out the 8600gt is going to be like a fx5200 on DX9!
A good article here
