View Full Version : Scary new problem
PC turned on for around 5-10 minutes playing warcraft, then suddenly turned off and restarted. As I have automatically restart on windows disabled that alone was a little confusing.
When it tries to reboot, it doesn't recognise any harddrives - it memory tests then stalls.
Manually restarting, did exactly the same thing about 5 minutes later.
Not changed any hardware/software recently other than the mouse - which i really don't think should be the issue!
Currently still stable, but not dared reload warcraft!
I'm still under support2you warranty - but need to check if this might be a software/simple issue and try and diagnose it.
I have the PC on a surge protector and the other PC in the room (on a different plug outlet) is having no problems.
Update: After some testing it seems the machine won't \"restart\" at all, whenever restart is selected it stalls. Boots fine from off though :S
Update2: Seems to be back to normal.... wierd
USB Mouse?
USB stuff can cause problems sometimes
Yup, USB mouse - my ps2 battery ran out ;) never had problems like this before.
Seems to be fine now though.. strange!!

[quote:f0c13fb2c5=\"PrivatePyle@Work\"]That's what ya get for playing WoW ;)[/quote:f0c13fb2c5]
Haha, agreed XD
True, my preferred game is Guild Wars (and just spent 3 hours with no problems on it), but my other half bought me wow and is paying for my account so I'll occasionally play with him ;)
How did you get by without playing WoW for a few days?
I'll bet you just sit in the corner and shake - cold turkey syle...
Get yourself a decent PSU

If you're looking at PSUs take a look at http://www.aria.co.uk/Products?search=pow-pcp&searchCat=560 as well...
Sounds ****ed to me, get another PC.
lol that's 1 way of fixing it :P
eww WOW. I would rather throw my HDD out the window than have WOW installed on it

Aww come on - there's nothing wrong with a graphics engine from 1995 tailored to suit the lowest common denominator - at least it runs fast!
[edit]also - why do WoW players seem to have their own language?! It's like D&D for the 21st century! I know guys who dress up to play and get in character!!! Then again - when I play Forsa2 I do make car noises and beep a pretend horn...
Horses for courses i guess...
Computer has now gotten worse but for reference, it did have a decent PSU. It cut off and rebooted, and didn't boot. Manually rebooting, It booted once and windows kept reporting new hardware of an IEEE controler, and then wouldn't post.
10 minutes later its booted normally again.
Suggestions?
I ran memtest for an hour the other day and it reported no errors.

I'm writing this from my laptop as now it won't load windows after I last shut it down. It starts to load then bluescreens with a stop error. Methinks I need to ring Aria tommorrow. (thankfully boss not at work this week)

Update: Left message on answer phone, here's hoping for a quick resolution...
Update: I called PC Clinic again to be told I must have a virus because I use Sophos Anti Virus rather than norton or mcaffee.
He told me to try and reinstall windows and if that didn't work. Hmm.... Will try tonight.

I have to agree with you, i rang up ages ago and they didnt really help me, they just said they dont know.
But if you think about it it is quite hard giving IT support over the phone for problems like Blue Screen Of Death because without having the pc infront of them they are having to guess what the problem could be as you can get that for soooo many reasons.
I was more annoyed about the fact they accused me of having insufficient PC protection, when I have a reputable virus scanner, a hardware firewall and a software firewall. Never once was I asked for my computer details.
Anywho, current plan thanks to The Architect is to try some bootable diagnostics software.

I've given him a diagnostic program to download which should be able to test a few things to see what's up.
PC Clinic over the phone is a pain because as you say it's hard to figure out what's wrong usually. Bringing the PC in tho to be checked out usually gets it fixed :D

Her :P
As I live over 100 miles away, don't drive and have a support2you warrenty, not going to be bringing it in ;) although I appreciate its the fastest way to get things done - and used to do so with PCs at my local store before they closed down and I came here ;)

Didnt you get the Aria Onsite Warranty?
Yes. Last official word was to contact customer services to arrange for someone to collect it if reinstalling windows didn't work. Hence coming here. ;)

Aria's sending someone to collect it tommorrow, as I'm off Wed-Fri, hopefully it will alll be sorted when I get back.
EDIT: I'm presuming I can safely ignore the RMA notice I just recieved.
It arrived back from aria repaired this morning before work (whoo!), and on first inspection there was mamoth cheering - it booted faster than its ever got out of the bios before, and on loading windows I found my old desktop files sitting there, as well as my old my documents folder, the rest is clean.
So far so good...
I move the mouse... nothing happens.
I plug in the mouse from my bf's computer... icon appears at bottom of screen indicating something was plugged into the usb port, but the mouse doesn't light up, and moving it does nothing.
I swear.
Grab usb-> ps2 adapter and plug in mouse from bfs computer, the mouse lights up but doesn't work, may be due to onboard firmware (its one hell of a mouse) not registering under ps2.
On the plus side... PS2 Keyboard works
I'll try nab a ps2 mouse from work, where I really need to head now!
Thoughts?
UPDATE: Checked with my mini usb mouse from my laptop - works on ps2 adapter, but not on usb
After a bit of prodding wires, all was well... for a few days...
Computer's broke again
Randomly shut off and couldn't reboot. I tried manually rebooting and I get NTLDR is missing
I would be tempted to blame the mouse!
I've known keyboards to produce BSOD's. I'm tellin' ya, USB aint all its cracked up to be sometimes!
i'm not using USB keyboard/mouse. Running my usual USB mouse through a ps2 adapter
update:
After finding a potential fix on the net, I made a boot floppy that would allow me to boot windows without actually changing anything.
I went to put in the boot disk, and had difficulty, realising one had been left in there by aria.
Removing that, I now just get a continual cycle of trying to load windows.
It maybe time for a reinstall - it's sounds stuffed
A reinstall the second time in a week - that can't be right
UPDATE:
Booted the computer with BartPE (http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/) It worked to an extent - didn't find the HDD as I forgot to add SATA controller drivers to the iso (oopsy), but it did give me limited functionality.,,
Until it randomly rebooted.
It can't just be a software issue.. can it?
Currently downloading knoppix.
update:
Did exactly the same thing with Knoppix
And to try and rule out environmental issues, it is on a surge protector, and always has been

Have you tried it in a room that's not haunted?
The last problem was due to a loose cable :S
Yesterday...
Got some new speakers, and it started crashing again. Thought that I might be loading too much onto one power socket so ran an extension from another room into my PC room and put the pc onto that.
Ran fine for the night.
Turned on this evening and randomly rebooted a few times again, now I get error codes when it tries to reboot.
Now booted manually.. 3 minutes and counting.... sigh....
After a significant amount of help from another retailer, combined with help from technical support at work, I located the problem as both a failing motherboard and a failing power supply. IIRC, the psu is under a 3 year warrenty, so will be contacting aria accordingly.
