ok so if i start a download on steam for example after about 10 minutes i lose connection with the internet and to connect again i have to reset the home hub
i was wondering if anyone knows a fix for this.

PS. i am connected wirelessly but looking into getting the home hub put in my room
and most of the time it happens when my download speed goes above 900KB/S

So, the only solution is to reboot the hub? Rebooting PC makes no difference?

Mr. Strawberry
16-08-10, 03:54
nope reboot the pc and when it logs me on it just stays unconnected and when i try to connect it says it cant

tried updating wireless card drivers

do BT home hubs get firmware updates ? I ask myself

yup they do http://www.stevelarkins.freeuk.com/bthomehub_softwareupgrade.htm

Mr. Strawberry

Agreed or get it swapped for another. It will be interesting to see how a wired connection goes for you.

Do not attempt this procedure on a PC wireless connected to the BT Home Hub.
:(

Are you with sky? Friend of mine has had exactly the same problem for some time now and has never found a solution, even with several engineers out.

and it takes out the whole router right? none of the others work, even via cable?

Mr. Strawberry
16-08-10, 04:34
no it is only worth about £150 max
this way they have to refund us the full amount we paid for it which was £350 :P

callumburns
16-08-10, 04:41
i was kinda meaning that lol :o glad your getting what it was originally worth mate i bet you and your parents are glad it went 'missing'

Mr. Strawberry

callumburns
16-08-10, 04:50
lol thats the worst thing about having a pc go wrong then you end up being the one thats pc becomes the family pc for a bit  i remember when my dads laptop charget burnt out a while ago and he kept asking to go on mines near enough all the time :( 15 minutes at the latest which turned into a couple of hours !

Mr. Strawberry
16-08-10, 04:52
lol it is annoying but atm there is not alot i can do about it :(
annoying thing about it is i think they give it to you for store credit so she cant put it torwards the PC i am building her :(

Can she not use it towards components then? I know she'll pay more from there but it'll be better than nowt or find someone who is buying a pc or laptop from there and get them to give you the cash and you use the store credit for it.

Edit: forgot to add Ive got a homehub not being used if you wanna make me a offer on it.

try the standard wireless troubleshooting.

Move the channel to another one, lower the wireless speed, lower the encryption level.

What normally causes this is simply heat. As more packets are being sent when you hit that top speed, it means the CPU in the router has to work harder encrypting them. Lower the encryption to give it an easier time and cross fingers.

The other thing I would try is a huge download, in some download manager than can limit speed. If you set off a DVD iso download at 800K max speeds, does it drop then?

any ideas on what to download i can think of illagal things that can be big (i.e games) if it is ok just to download part of it for the test?
also if the homehub thinks 1mb/s is top speed
how on earth is it meant to cope with 20mb/s that BT advertise :o

DoubleTop
16-08-10, 10:49
a linux iso maybe? A quick google for "large download test" got this page :)

Mr. Strawberry
16-08-10, 11:03
ok the 1GB file on there lowers from 800 to 600 randomly

DoubleTop
16-08-10, 11:05
that's odd, I get a nice consistent speed once it's "warmed up". The server it's running on must be a burst download setup as it rises up :D

1.46Mb/Sec and that's on my wireless.

DT.

Mr. Strawberry
16-08-10, 11:06
hmm
my signal does go from 3 to 5 bars when i start a download

DoubleTop
16-08-10, 11:07
that does sound like the router is struggling, how hot to the touch is it?

DT.

Mr. Strawberry
16-08-10, 11:12
not that hot but can feel it getting hotter

Mr. Strawberry
17-08-10, 03:09
ok going to bump this back up again
when i try to play left 4 dead 1 while playing it disconnects me from the internet :(

Snakedoc
17-08-10, 03:24
Did you get your phone cabling kit we talked about?

Mr. Strawberry
17-08-10, 03:26
no going into newport tommorrow to tell PC world how useless they are so will head into town afterwards and get my mother to get it for me :P

Mr. Strawberry
17-08-10, 23:55
hmm just happened again while downloading crysis warhead :(

on a side note i found out how PC world lost my parents PC :D
they moved all there RMA centres to 1 place and in the process lost over £100,000 worth of products :D lol
went there today and walked out with a brand new gaming pc that cost us £250 :P

Sniperdude
18-08-10, 00:35
erm should have cost you nothing at all

they lost something of yours

Mr. Strawberry
18-08-10, 00:42
in all fairness the PC was worth no more than £100 so getting £300 refunded is a good deal tbh :D
and if we chose a pc that cost £300 we would have got it for free but any amount we go over we had to pay for :D

still laughed at there most high end gaming pc
core i7 920
6GB ram
1TB HDD
HD5570 crossfire :D
and all that for a very cheap £1499.99 :D

My netgear router does the same if you're using more than 100 open connections at once - the memory buffer slowly fills up over 5-10 minutes then hangs the router until you reboot.

Mr. Strawberry
18-08-10, 01:50
are you using wireless aswell

PhillipM
18-08-10, 01:51
Yep.

Mr. Strawberry
18-08-10, 01:54
hmm so changing to wired could still help then

PhillipM
18-08-10, 01:58
Might do, but I've had it a few times with different routers, low tolerence for multiple open connections, cisco ones seem the best for avoiding it but they're pricey, I suppose like all computer kit it depends on the hardware inside and the overhead the firmware has to deal with regarding the number of connections used.

Mr. Strawberry
18-08-10, 02:00
ok well i will give it ago over the next couple of days
and see what happens

PhillipM
18-08-10, 02:02
Worth a shot, I'd imagine there's more overhead to deal with having the wireless on than a hardwired connection.

Mr. Strawberry
18-08-10, 02:03
all i need to do now is find the eithernet cable
havent used it in about 7 months
