View Full Version : Raidmax Cobra windtunnel mod + Silent Eagles
Started off with me installing 4 new fans in my case to try and get cooler temps since installing my 6800 GT, - I have now decided my tired looking Raidmax Cobra could do with a little updating,
this covers my first attempt then the drill came out
The front and side of my raidmax case, note the inside is very messy :-/
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c400/pault123/DSC00564.jpg
i've never been too happy with those fan heat sensors crossing the case window
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c400/pault123/DSC00563.jpg
The standard raidmax exhaust fans
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c400/pault123/DSC00540.jpg
After lots of struggling with these which I NEVER want to attempt again
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c400/pault123/DSC00526.jpg
The front was off (arghhhhhhh look at the silver drives in a black case what was i thinking when i built this)
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c400/pault123/DSC00527.jpg
I cant mount the fans on this side as the front bezel wouldnt fit back on
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c400/pault123/DSC00535.jpg
heres the fans i bought 2 x sharkoon silent eagle 2000 is actually incredibly quiet and tasty, and 2 x ccfl which has a sexy blue glow!
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c400/pault123/DSC00533.jpg
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c400/pault123/DSC00534.jpg
This yellow grill cant be good for airflow
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c400/pault123/DSC00538.jpg
Its coming off \"CRACK\"
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c400/pault123/DSC00537.jpg
There we go nice airflow, NOTICE the top right fan 'grill' has a segment filled in, all Cobras have this, what is that all about?
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c400/pault123/DSC00536.jpg
(note at this point in time i wouldnt have dreamt of putting a sharp implement to my case and decided enough airflow would make it through these tiny holes)
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c400/pault123/DSC00535.jpg
and proceded to install my fans on the rear for exhaust
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c400/pault123/DSC00528.jpg
and behind the front panal for my intake
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c400/pault123/DSC00529.jpg
Two CCFL's wouldnt fit together which was my original plan to put them both on the back, but the cirular CCFL bit protrudes and stops another fitting there, so i put one of either front and back.
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c400/pault123/DSC00521.jpg
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c400/pault123/DSC00522.jpg
Notice the window fan which comes as standard with the Raidmax case it blows in. Look at the 2 inverters and maze of wire on the floor of the case :-/
I thought i would be happy. initially i thought Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm nice colours (picture homer). heres some quick temperature tests i did, before and after the new fans>
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c400/pault123/temp.jpg
a drop of 2-3 degrees celcius.
WHO WAS I KIDDING? I'm not happy look at the messy cables, look at the lighting, i NEED MORE temp drop than that, becoming obsessive with increasing the airflow I learnt about Holesaws.
I figured these small holes - which also cover the back exhaust fans
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c400/pault123/DSC00535.jpg
HAD TO GO.
They were holding back my dream of keeping the Christmas Turkey frozen in my case. I wanted clean holes, right through, blowholes, a windtunnel!
A quick impulse buy later

and
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c400/pault123/ModStreamfull.jpg
did somebody say \"impulse\"

Mmmmmmmmmmmm Fans that look like golf balls :P
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c400/pault123/DSC00588.jpg
Yes i got a bit carried away, uv lamps, round cables, uv zip ties, 6x silent eagle 2000's etc etc.
The mess of cables before I stripped everything out!

I don't know what Raidmax make their cases out of but I went through 2 Bi-metal holesaws :( which kept getting stuck in the small perforations and stripping the teeth off (along with flinging the drill dangerously in the air!)
With the 3rd Holesaw managed to finish off the front of the case.
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c400/pault123/DSC00595.jpg
I'm pleased with the overall finished result, it tidied up really well. (used a metal file from b+q to smooth off the sharp edges)
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c400/pault123/DSC00593.jpg
WOW these look sexy!!!
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c400/pault123/DSC00585.jpg
Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c400/pault123/DSC00584.jpg
and the back complete with grills (not as tidy a cutting job, used a jigsaw when 3rd holesaw broke :hit: )
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c400/pault123/DSC00583.jpg
^^^^ note the brand spank OCZ Modstream very tasty.
The shelf below had to be sawn down to accommodate the Modstream. The fan grill and screws on it caught the edge and stopped it from sitting all the way back. Used a hack saw and it was very awkward due to the lack of hand movement which was restricted by the case.
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c400/pault123/DSC00591.jpg
I was planning on putting these four filters over the front intake Silent Eagles
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c400/pault123/DSC00587.jpg
But due to the large edge on them they wouldnt all fit, the edges covered the screw hole of the adjacent fan.
Some duct tape and one filter later, covered two of the front intake vents

*HACK*
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c400/pault123/DSC00576.jpg
It looks messy but it won't be seen and I wanted to make sure it wouldn't budge.

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c400/pault123/DSC00574.jpg
NO dust is getting through here :)
A nice gold sparkle from the outside
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c400/pault123/DSC00573.jpg
These unneeded ATX version 2 cables tucked out of the way
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c400/pault123/DSC00571.jpg
The Ocz fitted a treat once the shelf was a bit shorter

More zip tying wires out the way

The b+q Bi-metal hole saw
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c400/pault123/DSC00657.jpg
THREE of them ended up like this! Don't know what material raidmax use to make their cases :(

My shiny new Vantec Nexus fan controller for my 4 intake silent eagles

The back Eagles installed and the 120mm OCZ fan>>
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c400/pault123/DSC00631.jpg
Removed the last of the raidmax standard fans, this one was on the window
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c400/pault123/DSC00681.jpg
Replaced with this CCFL fan
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c400/pault123/DSC00676.jpg
Tidied it all up
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c400/pault123/DSC00672.jpg
Arghhhhhhhhhhh what a racket, my PC sounded like a space shuttle launch!
Since I don't like the 12 to 7 v cables I decided it had to go.
Also the blue CCFL ring outshone my UV tubes :(
You may say I have obsessive compulsive disorder, but.......

I can't stop buying Silent Eagles.
This is the SEVENTH one, and hopefully the final one to adorn my case. It will sit in the case window.
Since buying Oblivion (which ATE my Barton) the components took an overhaul since the last pics as well.

All cables are modular so the airflow is fantastic and the idle temps are now 22 degrees on the cpu as opposed to 39 on the cpu when I first started)

That was a very interesting read. Thanks. :D
Also, it made me realise just how much my Antec Nine Hundred needs one of those Vantec fan controllers... *drools*

Haha.....
Honestly. I Think The Case Looks Tacky And Wierd.
But I Prefer The Neutal Look.

More than what i would do to my Case anyway. Good Job

I bet they do - Chicks love hair-driers...
How much did that set you back?
A lot of cash! but its worth it ;)
I might get one of these

That would be EIGHT silent eagles in my case!
Should i make the purchase? LOL

Run out of money to shovel to the makers of silent eagles?
I'm actually tempted to buy one of these for my back fan, its the smallest and noisiest. Are they really that different noise-wise?
Loving all the hard work you done on the case... only 1 thing springs to mind though.
you cant polish a ****..... that case is UGLY, get it in the bin and buy a Antec 900 or like.

Coming from someone with a gary glitter of a case which should be winner of Canal Street case of the year thats rich!! http://209.85.62.25/6386/65/emo/gaysmiley.gif
Alex can't find the silent eagle cpu cooler anywhere on sale yet.
As for the noise they are one of the quietest biggest air pushing fans period. Get purchasing a worthy upgrade!
Hey nothing wrong with my case..
I like the plain look, although the cooling isnt the best on the case but it's cool enough.
I like my 900 :)
Ditto.
Antec 900 is very popular at the moment.
These look like a 900 beater (they come in black too)

I got the pleasure of having a play with an Antec P182 and it's stunning - surprisingly low priced and touch cramped - but the build quality and the features built into it - it's staggering...

Really, really, NOT my cup of tea. I prefer the industrial/futuristic look of the Antec 900. Plus; where's all the holes for cooling?!
Nono, I'll stick with my 900 Gamer thanks! I can see how some people would be attracted to the P182SE, you know, its shiney!
I would splash the cash on the Antec 900 but i dont want a black case...
If I could get 1 in silver i'd buy 1 straight away...
otherwise i'll stick with my AX1

After much deliberation i've decided i will upgrading my case and since i cant find the silver case I like i've decided on going for the Antec P182.

I will only be impressed if you fit 5 x 120mm fans, to compete with the 8 Silent Eagles :O
there's already 5 placements for 120mm fans as standard...
just gotta get 10 fans to fit...
awsome case though.
If I fit a 5th fan to my Antec 900 do I compete? Or does my 200mm top fan count for 2?
as 2 x 120mm would = 240mm your not quite there yet ;)
DAMMIT! I need a shipment of silent eagles ASAP!!
But seriously folks, I'm going to get myself a 120mm side fan to cool my graphics card a bit more :)
DAMMIT! I need a shipment of silent eagles ASAP!!
Coiler sort him out you work for silent eagle dont you ;)
Just thought i'd bump this for the benefit of all the new members who like a good mod/review :p
Also I never manged to upgrade to the Antec P182 but i did get a
http://www.leaddigi.com/shopping/images/malabs/CA-GZATS.gif
GIGABYTE 3D AURORA in silver.
Wish I could have had the windowed Aurora, suppose I'll have to make do with the vented version
Surely you can buy the side panel though.
I use to have one of those Aurora's with out the window, was a very nice case lots of room and easy for cooling.
Very nice mod coiler, but I can't say I'm a big fan on the cases with big plastic fascias, windows in the side panels and UV lights. I much prefer the clean lines of the Lian-Li cases; the V600 is the epitome of style and elegance in my opinion. I am a bit obsessive about cases though, I’ve owned a PC-7, V600 and PC-A16 in the last year
Wow you are clearly crazy!!!!
You removed some yellow mesh, then cut out the holes to improve airflow, then added some nasty gold mesh???
Not alot of sense there.
You could have saved the holesaws and gotten a DREMEL.
Oh and how much were all those fans???
Have you still got them?
I just cut 4 holes in my mates nasty giant case so he could add some fans.
Dremel was too messy, VERY strong metal the holesaws gave a nice clean circle at least.
Airflow wise the AC ryan fan filter let through loads of air, the yellow thing didn't :)
Put the lot in the bin when I got my Coolermaster 590 LOL
This is the dremel attempt on the back, no where near as neat as the front >>>

I bet you miss all your sharks, and the lovely colours that case had :|
:)
You got rid of the sharkoons?
went in stockport tip LOL
was planning to sell the case but it had a few scratches marks etc so just chucked it in the end
lol! was a rather liberating experience chucking it over the tip wall, really slung it and watched it smash into a thousand pieces. well sort of.
Ha ha... cool, did that myself with a load of old PC's my mum dumped round here, they all had either 98 or ME on them with 128mb of ram and 1.1GHZ durons at the most :P
I hated that short period of time when my dad had a better pc than me......it's just not normal.
my dad had a better pc than me.
Never gonna happen, i build his pc's so he normally gets my hand me downs
