What's the carbon footprint of … the internet?

http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2010/aug/12/carbon-footprint-internet

part quote

"The internet releases around 300m tonnes of CO2 a year – as much as all the coal, oil and gas burned in Turkey or Poland, or more than half of the fossil fuels burned in the UK"

I dare say 90% of that is pron viewing. :P

thats a bit of a strange comment

"The internet releases around 300m tonnes of CO2 a year"

how can it "release" co2 when "the internet" isnt physical matter? and by that I mean its just data stored on servers that users connect to and it would be the servers themselves producing a footprint - not the internet, especially when you look at some supercooled server storage rooms (we have a few at work) that use a huge amount of energy.

Well its the same thing as food packaging from supermarkets isnt it, some of them display the carbon footprint of, lets say for example, a litre of OJ.

You dont get carbon fumes when you open the carton do you, its the overall cost of producing/delivering they are on about - same with the hardware required to provide the internet.

So while the wording may seem strange, its still an accurate statement when taken in the right context.
