but could a SATA 1 hdd work on a SATA2 controller (ie from the motherboard)

Yes it can, but sometimes if there is compatability trouble, a jumper needs to be used. I do believe only some drives have this jumper.

I believe a sata 1 drive should be fine on a sata 2 controller. The other way round sata 2 drive on a sata 1 controller (which is what Blaine is describing that can be sometimes \"fixed\" with the jumper on the drive) is where problems can sometimes occure.

I'm using a SATA 150 drive (WD Raptor) on a SATA 2 controller - absolutely fine. :D
