looking for a TFT monitor, not a widescreen.
Which is good? What about dead pixels? Do the budget monitors suffer from them more?

I'm im the same situation PP. The Hanns-G is a fantastic monitor, but I never got around to buying one.
But now I'm thinking a 19\" wide-screen monitor probably wouldn't be big enough in the long run, as my 8800GTS is a great card, and I'd like to game at slightly higher resolutions, also also enjoy a bigger screen if I watch any movies :)
I have the Samsung SyncMaster 931BF (19\"). It's nice, with a 2ms response time and a very nice native resolution, but they don't come cheap unless you find a bargain. Before this I had a bog-standard Digimate 19\" with 12ms response rate, and 1024x768 resolution that I thought was good until I got this one.
All I can say is set your budget, do the research (i.e. look into response times, dot pitch, native resolution, input etc), and then check around for the best deal. There's a ton of advice out there, just waiting for you to discover it. Or you can look into the suggestions above.

if you like high resolutions, I'd recomend a 20" rather than a 19", there is very little size difference, but the resolution is much higher.
a 19" would have 1280x1024, where a 20.1" would have 1600x1200
or widescreen is 1440x900 vs 1680x1050
or even a 24" widescreen, those usually have a resolution of 1920x1200, which is higher than a fullHDTV at 1920x1080.
Dont bring up old topics lol!
