View Full Version : Full RAM not recognised-help!
Running Win7 Home Edition. Installed 3x Zeppelin 2G memory card, however windows only says I have 4gb installed. Even in the BIOS it says 6gb RAM. Any ideas to overcome this?
My build is core i7 920, x58i XFX force mobo, Radeon HD5450 graphics card.
Thanks in advanced. BIOS is updated too, and ive tested the memory in another pc, all working fine.

Download and run CPU-Z.
On the memory and SPD tab does it recognise all three sticks?
When I type in msinfo32 a window come up which tells me I have 3.24gb installed (I know its not going to be the full 4gb). In the BIOS system info tab it has 4023 (i think that its the no. it has with 40 something something). Sorry but whats SPD and where to download CPU-Z from. My first build so a bit new to all this stuff!

I've got no idea what SPD is, it's just a tab on CPU-Z.

A quick google for 'CPU-Z' will give you a download link ;)
SPD - Serial Presence Detect (http://searchcio-midmarket.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,,sid183_gci533524,00.html)
Basically its how the PC knows what to set the ram to.
turn memory remap on in the BIOS.

turn memory remap on in the BIOS.
That won't work will it?
If I turn off memory remap in the BIOS my BIOS only recognises 3.2GB.
turn memory remap on in the BIOS.
that's what it was on my rig :) turn that on and there we go, full memory :)
DT.

i'm pretty sure it should be on.
in the Asus BIOS it says something about windows only recognising 3.2Gb if you turn it off...
That's why you turn it ON Toonshorty ;)

I turned mine on otherwise I didn't get the full 4GB.
But when I had it turned off the BIOS only showed 3.2GB.
His BIOS is showing 4GB.
has he tried different slots? some slots could be DOA.

Yeah.
The XFX X58i wasn't the best motherboard when it came to DIMM.
maybe swap around ram, got another rig you can check it in?
i would as mentioned above try different slots to, try some different ram?
run memtest, just try and swap about everything till it works :D
Hi, ive swapped the RAM around and ran the CPU-Z program. CPU-Z detects 6gb RAM, BIOS detects 6gb RAM, Win 7 detects 4gb RAM!!! I know its not affecting the function but I would just like it to show the correct info. Also how do you do a remap in the BIOS? A step by step instruction would be nice. Thanks again guys.

It depends on the motherboard.
I can't really tell you.
Just go through all the motherboard pages until you find it.
It'll most likely be under RAM somewhere.

It is definitely windows 7 x64?
The x86 version shows 4Gb but using less....
can you post a screen shot of the properties page.
Memory remap should be under ram settings somewhere. If this does not help, try MSconfig and advanced boot options and tick max memory box, then reboot.
I can tell you it is definitely X64 win 7, when i tick max memory it only allows me to select a highest value of 3328.
Don't set anything in max mem, just tick box and reboot. Try finding memory remap in BIOS, it's pretty important. If you have a link I will down the manual for your mobo and find it for you.
Mobo is XFX force X58i intel 1366 DDR3 pt no. MB-X58I-CH19

I actually bought my mobo, CPU & memory as a bundle from aria, all fitted and tested by them, I just dont know why this started happening now!
Cheers again!
To gain access to files you need to sign up. Look in your manual, under BIOS settings and memory for the remap or similar worded function.
Ok i tried your first solution of ticking max memory in msconfig without setting a value. Rebooted pc now says 5.99gb :) happy days. BUT just for knowledge could you please explain why win7 did this limiting to 4gb and why ticking max memory worked? I think i can call my first build successful now! Thanks again!

Glad to see it's working.
I actually had to limit my maximum memory at one point because it was too much awesomeness for my Creative sound drivers.
They fixed that problem though :D
SP1 - Windows had a manual memory amount set, ticking maximum memory enabled Windows to use all the available RAM.
I think it's a chipset thing. I had a similar issue with Vista and 4GB of RAM not being seen correctly. This was on my old system. I randomly found this solution by experimenting lol.
Glad to be of help.
Just been reading this thread. Good work team :)
BUG-ger!! 24hrs after everything was sorted i had a BSOD whilst booting up! Message read IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL.
Booted up 2nd time, another BSOD, message Paged fault in non paged area.
How do you post the memory dump files on here?/ where do you find these files so I can show you. AHH
Hi SP1, don't panic. The BSOD is actually a good thing if you know what to look for. Half way down the screen is Technical Information, below that is e.g. ****STOP**** 0x000000003b followed by even more numbers. The 3b is the error code. So when you see the BSOD make a note of the error code and just post that. The error code will identify both the cause of fault and the most likely solution. If any information is added below the code e.g. ativx.sys then post that as well. Cheers
Caused by driver ntoskrnl.exe.
This is the BSOD i got after installing 6gb RAM (physical sticks)! How do you post a screen shot of the BSOD, that might help to make it clearer.
