View Full Version : Power Supply Exploded!!!
Hi all
Well here?s my story, I recently bought an XBLADE Silver case from aria along with some other components, to build a second pc (just for fun and a bit of experience). This morning the graphics card arrived and I fitted it.
Then the moment of truth came, I inserted the power cable into the computer and the other end into a belkin surge protector. I turned the psu on from the back, it sparked up , and then some thick white smoke rised from it.
After laughing about the sparks (I have to admit, it was kinda funny), I realised that the psu could have taken out my components.
Heres the spec of my pc-
AMD 3500,
M2n4 sli
1 gig ram- kingston,
6600gt
80gb sata samsung
I dont think these parts need a psu of more then 450 watt. The specs of the psu are Ezcool 450WATT, ATX-JSP (it came with the xblade case).
I am now off to test the ram and the graphics card, hopefully they will work.
Anyone have any advise on how I should procede? I am guessing that Aria would be willing to give a refund for the case+psu, or they could send me a replacement psu, but it cannot be the same one (as I cant afford to take a risk).
Cheers all
all i can say is
GOOD LUCK
I would say so on a refund, and if its brand new, shouldnt broken parts be covered? im a bit hazy on the rules to be honest though.
that happened to me once but luckily none of my other components were gone. realised afterwards that the little red switch on the bak was set to the american power setting no the UK one.
Yet another story to use as ammo against using psu's supplied with cases.
If it blew when you switched the mains switch on the back then you might have been lucky and nothing else has been damaged but don't quote me on that though.
Hope it turns out everything else is ok mate.

well manonfire (nice name) I hope you know what you are doing !
You say that when you switched on the PSU (switch) it started to spark. I assume that this is the PSU sparking and not the motherboard.
This also suggests faulty wiring as I understand it that you have NOT turned on the PC itself using the PC power button (normally at the front of the case with the reset switch) which is connected to the motherboard.
As general rule of thumb, components' plugs are polarised, meaning that they can only go in one way, so I hope nothing has been \"forced in\".
Hi doctor 8ball
Nope nothing was 'forced in', and the wiring as far as I know was correct. It basically sparked when I turned on the big black switch on the back.
I also have some good and bad news. The good news is that my graphics card, ram, sound card have all survived. (I tested them in another pc) :D
The bad news is that the motherboard looks dead. I tried out a another psu and the little green light on the motherboard did not come on, I also tried to on the pc, and it would not turn on. The psu I tried was Antec True Power 330watt. I know it is a bit low on the watts, but the green light should come on. :(
Hopefully the processor survived, I need to test that yet, but I have a gut feeling that it did
xD how much did the motherboard cost u?
Himesh, the motherboard cost me about £30.

Another point to look at is to make sure the motherboard is mounted high enough from the base plate chassis. (make sure it IS mounted using the correct height mounting screws)
Any contact from the mb to the chassis will no doubt cause a short and kill the mb.
Also any small screws or loose bits of metal from the chassis which are forgotten about or inadvertently roaming under the mb will cause mb death.
Good method is to plan out and get rid of all metal parts you are intending to remove prior to installing the mb (5.25 bay drive metal chassis cover for example) I use a small pair of pliers for such activities as i cant remember how many times i have cut myself through tough metal parts too stubborn to remove, but thats another story ...

not too bad to replace then. but still annoying lol

Thanks for the advise.
I once cut myself trying to take out a cheap 3.5inch memory card reader from my case. It was just small enough to fit into the slot. Anyhow after fitting, I found out it was a DOA, which meant I had to take it out and send it back. Taking it out ending up being a painful experience, I can still see stains of blood around that 3.5inch panel!
£30 is not much to leave, but as you said Himesh, it is very annoying. Hopefully the RMA process with aria will be smooth.

LOL, seems like you are a little jinxed on these?
my mate once caught his hair in the cpu fan as he booted the pc up, i have never heard such strange high pitched noises coming from an adult male before. i need him to do it again, but this time have an appropriate recording device running.
omg the stories i can tell....
lol... the disadvantages of having long hair. how did he get it untangled/out in the end?

Lol, as Himesh, how did he get hair out from the cpu fan?

I reversed the polarity.
