Windows Vista (business, and free of charge)
Fedora 7 mostly until my gaming rig is back up

the rest of the house runs XP Pro which I also had for free, MSDNAA rocks

say... are you allowed to somewhat distribute these free copies?

Illegal...

Anyway, I have vista ultimate, only cost £60, ebay closed down the auction after i got it, so its not so bad. You can use a oem bios hack for vista and it makes it free, but i am safe with my legal windows and wouldnt go any other way tbh.

XP Home here, i agree with the dodgy OS thing for the sake of £60-£70 for oem software its not worth the hassle tbh.

i never suggested dodgy software. Is Linux any good? i have no experience with it whatsoever. What distro shud i use?

XP Professional... and no i didn't pay for it :P
I actually can't believe people still do :?

People always find ways in which you can install newer microsoft products like IE 7 and WMP 11. As i say, \"Why pay for it when you can get it for free?\"

Because quite simply, it is theft. There is no easier way to put it.

Certainly there is no excuse these days, with a wealth of free software alternatives on the market.

i can't see a pirate copy of windows being very stable, I assume you need a crack as well as a dodgy serial? if you cant afford windows use linux

never saw what was so good about ubuntu

Hosser

Best thing about Ubuntu? The APT package manager. Sure, it's not exclusive to Ubuntu, but the fact that it's included really helps in my opinion.

sudo apt-get install <insert program name here>

Can be used to install just about anything, if you have the right repos.

And I'm running Vista Ultimate, Mandriva 2007.1, Fedora 7, Ubuntu 7.04 and Windows Fundamentals for Legacy PCs. Some of those are on the same PC.

well I use it, and my university uses it, and I love it, also under fedora yum does the same thing as apt, so not a big selling point

why have 3 OS? XP home and XP pro have no difference in performance so why keep them both, also vista kicks ***, XP was nowhere near as stable when it came out

Hosser

Perhaps he has them on different PCs.

Yeah, I have multiple copies of XP Home and Pro. They dont differ in actual performance, but they do differ in features and price.

I used to the cheap copies of XP Pro but now the prices are cheaper for the legit copies i would pay that but I do disagree with the fact you have to pay for more than 1 licence per household, so i did use my free Vista Home Premium that came with my Dell and put it on the other 2 pcs in my house.

If you enable \"USB Support via BIOS\" rather than \"via OS\" in your BIOS you should be able to set it up without need of a PS2 keyboard.

Hey Guys,

Ok i bought a £75 pc from eBay to use as a Server (IBM P4 2.4Ghz 512mb) and omg its soooo quite, but anyway, on there it has a Windows XP Pro COA licence sticker on the case but when i read it it says 1-2 CPU. So does this mean it can be used for 2 PCs or for a 2 CPU computer?

I already have windows home Key & Pro, what do i want with this other Xp Pro key........

It means it can only be used on a PC with one or two processors. Want to use it on a PC with 4 CPUs or more? Well you can't. It's an unlikely contingency, but there you are.

I doubt it would allow you to use a Quad-core CPU on that licence, since Windows XP doesn't properly distinguish between multiple physical CPUs and multiple CPU cores.

I use XP pro. Just not enough support out there for vista yet :?

It should actually work fine - WIndows can differentiate between physical and logical CPUs...

We tested an XP Pro install with a pair of dual core Xeons and it worked a treat - gave four CPUs in task manager and let all four CPUs get maxed out too. It seems it knows physically where the CPUs are and will allow a maximum of two physical CPUs - Let's see what happens with quad core Opterons ;)

Hosser
25-09-07, 22:41
Ah right, cool =D

Still, best not to waste a Quad-core CPU on Windows XP. The multiprocessor kernel on Windows Vista = So much better. It's incredible how much faster Vista is on this hardware. Obviously makes better use of memory and the GUI is rendered directly by the CPU, of course. All helps.

Believe it or not vista is also faster with aero on rather than off, but if you want to get the best performance, aero without transparency is the best, as it is drawn directly from the gpu, rather than making the cpu work.

You've practically quoted a post I made in another topic, right here. It is indeed the truth.
