View Full Version : ***CLOSED*** Tuesday Morning Trivia * Winner * guardy *
Another HP Picture Frame up for grabs this morning!
In the good old days, you had to buy an extra 3D card to run games in pretty 3D mode. What was the first retail 3D addon card to go on sale and how much was it?
Answers in by noon!
vodoo by 3dfx
bout £345 ...
Is it too tactical to post this later on just before it closes? :D
You forgot the price zodiark

What's being counted as a 3D card? as many early 3D cards were 2D chips with a few 3D functions added on...
There's only 1 answer I'm sure. ;)

I would suggest Aria means the 3d only PCI retail cards of the late 90s, but I could be wrong.
Hmm, my guess would be Video Toaster for the Amiga.
People need to read the question more carefully:
"The Diamond Edge 3D was the first consumer 3D accelerator card, based on the NVIDIA NV1 chipset." from here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diamond_Multimedia)
"Prices for Diamond's line of Edge 3D multimedia accelerators start at $249 - $299" from here (http://www.highbeam.com/doc/1G1-17465739.html)
EDIT: since you're being picky and its not technically the first 3D addon card:
Diamond Monster 3D 3dfx Voodoo1 4MB PCI Retailing at approx $300.00
This is my answer^^
I don't want to win though.
a 3D addon card.. so something you have in addition to your existing 2D card... so we are looking in the voodoo area :)

Modified answer to match Robin's hint.
3DFX Voodoo was the first one I had, and the first one I remember hearing about, so I'm putting that down :P
It was the Diamond Edge 3D back in '94 I think. It's shocking by today's comparisons, can't even accelerate polygon based 3D! The price was around $249-$299 (from link off of wikipedia). There was a 2xx0 and 3xx0 versions, with 2MB and 4MB of RAM options. I think you could plug in SEGA saturn gamepads into some of them with the gameport, that's old skool.
I see there has been a hint given now, that would change my answer then as this one's too old. The first one that comes to mind is the 3DFx Voodo, but I can't recall if that was the first. There was the S3 ViRGE as well, something else I'm forgetting too..
There was one before but no game support and no-one bought it.

The first pci 3d card was 95, I was assuming it was that
S3 ViRGE Was released in 1995 at $199 release.
There are so many to choose from and pick between, nearly impossible.
3Dfx Voodoo 1 - $229.95.:)
I remember having the voodoo 3dfx where you had that thick cable going from the voodoo to the other graphics card out the back the you plugged your monitor into the graphics card.
I seem to remember i had 2 voodoo 3dfx cards together as well.
So i will say 3dfx voodoo $250
Sorry i have put 2 answers down count this one please (sorry about that)..
Diamond Monster 3D 3dfx Voodoo1 @ around $300

I'd say 3DFX Voodoo at a retail price of about $220 - 250.
Can't find the price anywhere.
3DFX Voodoo - $229.95
Wiki is useless for looking up prices :\
Tasmania 3d @$250 released before the vodoo. Still a tricky question. Heres hoping.

Robin did mention Voodoo ;)

I'm going with the 3D Diamond Monster @ £200
but I was sorely tempted to go with the S3 Virge.
3Dfx Vodoo,
although not the first on the market with a 3d engine in their card it was the first one that had a separate 2d card which the others had 2d onboard.
Price $220-$250

You need to do what I do which is:
1) Wake up at about 11-11:30AM.
2) Check clock to make sure I can still make post in Morning Trivia (e.g. Before 12)
3) Google the question.
4) Post the answer.
5) Go do whatever needs doing.
6) ???
7) PROFIT!

Ok, we were looking for 3D cards that you added to your system in addition to your existing 2D card, so answers of 3DFX Voodoo types from the mid nineties is about right. :)
Winner from the pile is.... guardy!
