View Full Version : Lack of Glossary
Hi
Benn looking aound your site, and getting strangely excited over computer components and ideas of home builds etc etc etc.
However - i havent scratch built a machine for well over 5 years, and only done a few upgrades since.
Strangely, the PC industry hasnt stayed still in the intervening years, and there are many new terms in use, for example PCI-e - now when i last build AGP was the buzz word although PCI was heard of it was for true geeks only.
So when i see some spec like 2 x PCI-E x16 (blue @ x16 mode, black @ x2 or x4 mode), 1 x PCI-E x1 (x1 or diabled mode), 3 x PCI 2.2 i start to panic.... especialy the talk about modes!
So - how about a glossary page? even if Aria PC dont actualy provide the content how about osme links to good sites that give all the good information in plain english to get us old farts who are a bit out of touch up to speed? (i suspect there are some young noobies who would also appreciate this).
Just a thought.

Sounds like a good idea to me, might encourage a few more people to self build.
yeh, may make more people buy loads of kit and then find that vista wont install..
lol but thats not Arias fault  or any other e-tailer for that matter
i know.... i didnt say it was.... heres the starter for the glossary
vista : a handy little tool that will not install..
Or my version :P
Vista: an amazing new operating system that is very safe and runs most programs, contrary to many peoples beliefs.
Think alot depends if you are running 32 bit or 64 bit, i gather the 64 bit version isn't very compatible at the moment.
64 bit XP wasn't compatible either, it will take a while for commercial 64bit to happen due to lazy manufaturers. I had the same driver issues on 64bit windows and vista, basically my sata doesn't work.

64-bit anything is crap at the mo, but like blaineoliver said, its the manufacturers fault not the OS developers. personally I think vista is great but hasnt thisthread gone a little off topic? I too would like to see a glossary as PCI-E and all the other new stuff confuses the crap outta me, I dont even have a sata device yet
www.tomshardware.com
I know everything from sites like this.
edited by mac, he spelt the linky wrong DOH!!
Just to warn people - the link give above DOES NOT GO to TOMSHARDWARE.
Either its been hacked or blaineoliver has given a false link.

www.fudzilla.com <-- take as rumours, there not a very valid site.

extreme tech have a nice topic explaining antialising and antroscopy. They all are good for reading, i read all of them daily, well, reg and toms.
blaineoliver - thanks for the links...
while we are still slightly off topic- can any one tell me is the Asus Commando P965 Socket 775 SLI or Crossfire in terms of graphic card support?
from what i have seen crossfire seems to be the betamax in this battle of formats, and i like the look of this board, but dont want to back an obolete board as i can only afford one graphics card at the moment. (i should point out that i am just trying to cover my future optiions... i may not want or need another graphics card - unless i fall in love with a 30 inch monitor or something!!! :D )
Thanks for the tips - especialy like the extremetech one.
Think its Crossfire, but to be brutally honest multi graphics cards are pointless UNLESS there are no cards to upgrade too. If you can only afford a midrange card now, when you have the £££ sell it and buy a single more powerful card. Least thats what i always do, setting profiles and stuff just isn't worth it.
Crossfire and SLi are the two standards adoped by DAAMIT and Nvidia respectively. They are just multiple socket GFX solutions for the two companies. Simple as, there not worth it unless your megga rich and are on the top card and thats the only way to improve performance.
Well - that answered that question for me.
S0 - sound cards - been looking around the site - and some peaple think they are now a waste of time as the on-board sound systems seem good enough, but places like extremetech seem to love the sound blaster Fatal1ty boards, which seem to get trashed by people who purchased them form Amazon.
I also note Aria PC dont seem to stock many - is this because they also agree the need for them is on the way out?

Also, onboard use the CPU, so if your on an older board, it can all help to lower processing usage.
a glossary would be a great idea for people returning after years, or just general noobys.
