View Full Version : Ati CF or Single 480?
I was going to upgrade to SLI 460's but found out my board dosn't do SLI only CF
So would i be beter getting a Single 480GTX
Or a second 5770 or another combo of ATI's
Price limit is £400ish :)
Thanks guys
another 5770 will beat a single 460, saw a review where a two 5750s beat a single 460. For £400 you could get two super cheap 5850s and have the most awesome pc rig ever :P
Maybe a single 5850. Give it try, If your struggling for fps you could then add another one.
If a single 5850 is enough, You could then treat yourself to a new Monitor or Psu, Ram etc, On the money you saved.

as above tbh.
the tessellation performance in CF is 100% scaling.

Don't understand that.

This.
Depends what you want/have. If you're into loads of AA, then a nVidia card is generally better, but because of how scorchingly hot the 480 is I find it hard to recommend. I'd say if you want loads of AA, a 460 is good enough for 1920x1200.
If you don't mind turning AA down, the ATI cards seem to have the edge, especially at higher resolutions... and as Lynx mentioned, 2x5850s would just annihilate most games. However, check the crossfire support for your favourite games - if there's only marginal improvement (less than 30% for having 2x5850s), then just getting one card (I'd say a 5870) is as Absinthe says probably better and upgrading another component at the same time.
the 480 seems to do better than a single 5870.
OMG i just dont know.
my new case should be here today and i reall want a new gpu to go with it :P
I think i may get a 5850 and if needed i will up it with another CF as Absinthe (http://forums.aria.co.uk/member.php?u=13033) said :)
but what type is the best?
XFX, Arianet, Asus, Powercolour???
Thanks guys

Don't understand that.
well dont understand it then :/ im pretty sure i stated clearly what i meant.
to help try and elaborate
2x5850 = better than 5870 and gtx480 in tessellation and in performance (unless CF is not supported)
as recommended ones go.. i would suggest as long as they are the stock shroud version you are likely to be doing great :)

I would steer clear of the 480 - it's too expensive for the performance it gives, and it's far too hot unless you have a very good third party cooler. It's poor value.
I can totally understand wanting a new GPU to go with it too though :P getting one 5850 and seeing how you get on is an excellent idea. Obviously the cheapest one is the Arianet, but I'd recommend the PowerColor one, as the cooler is excellent and very quiet (I've played with several of them on 5850s and 5870s). You also get a CoDMW2 Steam redemption code, which you can sell pretty easily if you don't want it yourself.

would it be a good idea if the op bought a 5870 which should be fine for a long time yet then in the future when prices drop, add a 2nd?

What one?
40157
or
40057
£60 more for the 2gb version.
im defo going for one of these tho Or a 5870.
This.
+1 as you have £400 to spend and a CF board 5850 is best:
I recommend two of these:
http://www.aria.co.uk/SuperSpecials/Other+products/Arianet+ATI+Radeon+HD+5850+1024MB+GDDR5+PCI-Express+Graphics+Card+?productId=40733
or this: £223 - Comes with Full Copy of AVP (Download Voucher), Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 and Assasins Creed
http://www.aria.co.uk/SuperSpecials/Other+products/XFX+Radeon+HD+5850+1024MB+GDDR5+PCI-Express+Graphics+Card+-+3+Free+Games!+?productId=40691
the XFX 5850 is a good price, especially with the 3 games.
