View Full Version : Will This Machine Work?
Hoping to build my first computer for me dad. He wants to spend about £400 so i went £25 over (total cost is £425.17 + P&P) he wants it to last 6- 7 years so i thought of getting a very upgradeable mobo. He wont use it for gaming or anything like that. Just emailing and word processing. Tell me if all this will work and how well it will work. and the best bit is that i get his old dell dimension 2250. its really old and rubbish. But i can rebuilt it as much as i want!

i think the mobo comes with everything onboard. he's not a hardcore gamer so i dont need a graphics card, the onboard will do. The case comes with a 400w power supply, will this be sufficent? Will the fan that comes with the cpu be ok or should i buy one? Will i need a case fan?
thanks, matt
Motherboard:
Looks like a good motherboard but no Onboard Graphics so you will need to purchase a graphics card.
Case:
Love those cases, excellent to work with. Only problem i have had, is a couple of times the side panel has become loose, which can create a bit of noise if it isn't sitting on a totally flat surface.
The power supply's in them are solid. Very good temps in the case aswell.
Hard Drive:
Loads of different opinions on which make is best. I personally recommend Hitachi at the moment, or Seagate. Just stay clear of Maxtors.
Operating System:
Are you sure you want 64Bit Windows? I highly recommend sticking with 32bit or going with Vista 8)
CPU:
The fan that comes with the processor will be fine :)
looks like im switching mobo then. onboard gfx is a must! i'll update it when i find one.
and i read that 32 bit versions of windows will only be able to use 3gb of ram. no matter how much is installed, is this true?
I believe so yes
But still not all programs/games will work with 64bit.....but your choice matey.
ok ive edited the mobo. so all this kit should work right?
ive also got another option. change the following
MOBO-
https://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Components/Motherboards/Socket+AM2+%28AMD%29/ASUS+M2N32-SLI+DLX+nF590+Socket+AM2+?productId=23066

i guess its the biggest debate in the world. AMD or INTEL. Im not really sure what to go with.
Im having problems trying to find a nice mobo with 4+ gb max ram and onboard gfx audio etc. looking for anything below £80. socket 775 intel. Please recomend some
Intel C2D all the way, amd aren't even a close 2nd on the performance per £ at the moment
so my current list at the top is fine?
yes i would say it looks fine. 8)
do you think it would last 7 years? with memory upgrades every 2 years or so?
[Removed at the request of the author]
yeh i forgot to mention that. Will this be up to vista so when vista is ready (64bit) i will be able to upgrade?
[Removed at the request of the author]
well i might just buy one with this order then.... any reccomendations? 128mb, 256mb? what?
7300gt 256mb (pref ddr3) would be perfect for vista, and could play the odd game too
yeh the only game i would play would be rise of nations. and that works fine on my dell 3100's onboard gfx. Cant find any with DDR3
so this would work? http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Components/Graphics+Cards/PCI-E/nVIDIA+GeForce+7+Series/+nVidia+GeForce+7300GS+256MB+PCI-E?productId=26971
Yeah for some reason Aria stopped stocking the DDR3 7300gt's :(
That would work but to be brutally honest its not very good at all, shop around and you could probably get a ddr3 gt for around £55
yeh i hardly know anything about gfx cards because im no hardcore gamer so onboards do me fine. Can you acctually reccomend one? under £50 prefferably
ive been reccomended this as a gfx card
http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Components/Graphics+Cards/PCI-E/nVIDIA+GeForce+7+Series/+nVidia+GeForce+7600GT+256MB+PCI-E?productId=24384
Yes that is a good card, but overclocked the DDR3 7300GT can match, thats the reason for it being shown to you.
Yup a 7300gt DDR3 overclocked will come close, but you could overclock the 7600gt too though and its only costs, approx £10 more?
Both good cards for the money just depends what you can afford.
ok this is the kit now

not 100% sure but i think that gfx card has 2 DVI outputs, depending on the monitor you may need a DVI to VGA adapter.
http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Peripherals/Cabling/Video%2FScart/DVI+TO+VGA+CONVERTER+?productId=7022
oh ffs, more stuff to buy, can someone reccomend me a graphics card that will work with vista (aero) and has vga output?
dude, id stick with that card.. They normally come with DVI-VGA adaptors anyway, and even if it doesnt, they'll cost about £2 from a local pc shop/special auction site..
yeh they're on aria anyway. ok so my final list is above + a dvi to vga adapter yes?
i have never needed to buy a vga / dvi adapter all cards i have bought came with at least one.
ok so my list is fine? anyone got any idea on why the main site is loading so slow?
ok so last list?

Change the HDD to a sata drive and does the case come with a psu? (cant tell myself as the main site appears to be on a go slow or is down atm) If it does come with its own psu chances are its not very good so throw that one away and buy a branded one around 400-450watt.
Belso said he's bought that case before, and said that the psu is solid. Its a 400 watt. the site is back up now so you can take a look.
Its just personal preference i guess, its just i wouldn't trust a supplied generic psu. I would rather buy a cheaper case and stick a £30 psu in it.

I concur...
We use those EZ Cool case's at work.
Hell we even use them for the 2 servers we have running in the office.
There fine, and will do him well
