just got my new stuff today,

Athlon 64 X2 5600
Abit KN9-S
2 x 1GB Elixir DDR2 800
nVidia GeForce 8600GT 256MB PCI-E
Seasonic 430w PSU

put it all together (was annoyed at only having 1 IDE slot, no DVD drive for me now) switched it on, booted Vista, let it install USB/LAN other drivers for mobo. retarted the machine to let it finish installin the drivers. went to nVidia site for drivers (no DVD remember) and the machine froze, I thought it was a driver issue so I restarted and tried again, same thing, except now when I switch it on it does nothing, HDD light is permanently on but nothing happens, screen stays blank, nothing. So I assume one of my components, probably the mobo, has died. I COULD MURDER RIGHT NOW, I WANT TO KILL.
help would be appreciated (with the pc, not with murder) coz I think im gonna hang myself, 350 down the shitter

Have you tried booting up with only the bare essentials plugged in? ie, CPU/RAM/GFX and with nothing else? If it doesnt post, then you will know its one of the 3 things. If it at least posts, then start adding in the other components 1 by 1, until it fails to find out what the problem component is.

The other thing is to check that there are no rogue screws/random bits of metal in the case that could be shorting out the motherboard and causing the problem?

it does nothing, absolutely nothing, which means no BEEP codes, I can't test the components seperately as I don't have another PCI-E mobo or GFx card and this is the only machine with DDR2, what the hell would cause this to happen, it's all brand new and it did work for a few minutes.

[quote:fab53f5a65=\"PrivatePyle@Work\"]could this be a dead PSU? i guess you have tried it out of the case?[/quote:fab53f5a65]

Thats what I was getting at.. Try it out of the case, with the bare essentials (cpu/ram/gfx) only, and build up from there.

to test a psu unplug it from EVERYTHING except a fan or 2 then use a paperclip to short out the green wire to any black, you need to keep the paperclip inplace.

This fools it into thinking you pressed the power button on the case, if it powers up the fans chances are its ok.

Linky ^^ if you want a more in depth \"tutorial\"

I think it's a dead PSU as well.

surely if the psu blew then there'd be some sign that it had.

There are two halves to a PSU, so it could still power fans and its own fan but give the board no power. If it went kaput in front of you then you would smell it, but if it was damaged before you got it, you wouldnt easily be able 2 tell.

Two halves to a psu? What halves might they be exactly? Please explain?

Its a switch mode psu not a linear psu with a mains transformer in. The chances are it wll either work or it wont, yes there might be signs of it dieing ie a smell of burnt components but this isn't always the case. It might be a dry joint for example which would cause it to stop working hence the suggestion to try powering something simple up like a fan, if you had a multimeter available you could check each rail individally, assuming you have a pin out of the mobo connector.

@ Lovefist you say you can't test the components seperately as you don't have another PCI-E mobo or GFx card and this is the only machine with DDR2 well could you prove the psu in another pc?

yes i could easily test the PSU in another machine, its just that the system gives every impression of being powered on, all fans go, PSU, CPU, GFx card, both lights on mobo are lit and it all worked for a few minutes when i first set it up and it don't smell burned out. can't test till the morning though, will a 300W PSU run this system?? coz thats the only spare I have

lol, yes I have tested the monitor, and the PSU now as well, they both work fine which means I have a more expensive problem on my hands

ok, so just to confirm... you have tested:

The monitor ;)
The PSU
The entire PC setup out of the case (to check that the case wasnt shorting out the motherboard)
Starting up the bare essentials (cpu, ram, gfx) out of the case

Sounds daft but unplug ALL the memory sticks and drives, if the memory is faulty stopping the pc from posting you SHOULD get something a POST or error beep at least (you do have a speaker of some description fitted i assume), this could suggest memory error as i have never heard of a drive stopping a pc from posting but theres always a first time. If it posts then put 1 stick of memory in, if it still posts then put the other in etc putting 1 component back in at a time.

If none of the above works i think you might need to start swapping stuff out ie cpu / mobo

A P.I.T.A. but always a good idea in case something has shifted and shorting on the case.

ive done everything you guys suggested but still no luck, I returned the mobo, hopefully the new 1 will work
