Well most of you know I love my iPhone, but recently i've started to get a little bored with the iPhone and it's lost some of it's appeal, I think mainly because EVERYONE seems to have one ;) And being the sucker for new gadgets, I've gonna and got my myself a Galaxy S Android phone so I can swap between them when I get bored with 1 or the other.

http://galaxys.samsungmobile.com/

So far I've been VERY impressed with the Galaxy, Very fast and Amazing clarity on the Super Amoled Screen. Comes with 8gb on board memory which just under 6gb is usable, So i've ordered myself a 16gb micro sd card, so it'll give me as much space as my iPhone does then.

The biggest plus is the 5mp Camera on there.

here's a couple of sample pics I took this morning using the Galaxy, let me know what you think.

You could mistake it for a non digital camera IMHO, it is definitely not a stunner compared to normal cameras, but for what it is, very impressive.

Ill make it my duty to get you back on its side :P

I still got my iPhone so dont worry about that.

Dont think the iPhone 4 is that good tbh, certainly not worth the upgrade from the 3GS anyway.

In a month I'll probably make a decision to sell 1 of them anyway but for now I'll see which gives me the most satisfaction :D

i think you have picked the wrong droid tbh mate :|

must admit tho i cant wait to see what this 2.2 update is like as i have a couple of niggles and thats it. i think its almost perfect.

I know a few people who have the Galaxy S, and they are all very impressed with it. They all say its a contender to the HTC Desire and iPhone too.. The only thing they have said that lets it down is a slight plasticy feel compared to the other 2..

tystar
16-07-10, 13:16
TBH Doesn't feel too plasticky to me at all, and the reason for going for this over the Desire is the menu system on this is very similar to the iPhone menu which is good for me.

Just missing flash on this model, because at the mo I have no iPlayer on here yet.

Other than that cant really fault it yet.

Flash will be coming with Froyo which samsung say will be released for the Galaxy S by the end of the month!

Edit: No-one saw that... right...

I need a new phone and am thinking of getting this one, did you get on pay as you go or contract, and could you possibly tell me if there are any negatives on this phone please?

Thanks :).

tystar
16-07-10, 15:06
Negatives :- No Flash Support Yet. ..........

That's it from my point of view, Others may say different.
Upgrade on Contract

But Seriously though not found any faults as yet but only had a day to play with it.
Only downside i found is the Market place doesnt have same amount of apps as what i've been used to with my iPhone which literally has a app for everything lol.

Pullen
16-07-10, 15:17
I've got an iPod Touch, so apps don't really bother me that much as I can just use that for my app addiction :P

Edit: Have you watched any videos on it/listened to music as I like to watch vids on the go and as you can have extra storage for this, I would like to use this rather then my ipod touch for vids :).

Tystar you've got new phone OCD issues!

another contract? this the 11th one now :D

tystar
16-07-10, 15:40
Videos play better than on the iphone much clearer and no need to convert as it has native divx support too, music ive not played with too much but seems to be as good as the iphone.

coiler, this isnt a new contract just a extension of my old 1 :p

Pullen
16-07-10, 16:23

Just one last question, what's it like to type compared to the iPhone?

Exactly the same if you leave predictive & Swype off.

You getting it on contract or pay&go?

coiler

swype is no where near as fast as predictive text,

Ok, thanks.

I'm thinking of getting it on Contract as the start-up costs of getting it on pay&go are a bit out of my reach as I've only just got a job (I'm 16) and I'll be using the internet quite a bit and with one I'm looking at for a fiver extra a month i get 500mb free which i suppose would be better as I believe i wuld spend more then a fiver on it anyway.

It's a great choice of phone, the screen is particularly impressive, which is a little more than can be said for the camera shots, but they're still a quality that wasn't really available on a general last-gen handset, so it's still pretty good.

I'm so tempted by one of these! I can't wait until then end of August when I can finally get my grubby mits on one :)

tystar
17-07-10, 00:55
I've been so torn all day going back and forth between this & my iPhone 3GS.
I'm finding that having a app for everything on the iPhone is a big draw, but the screen, weight, camera, social integration and it's shiny and new :D of the Samsung keeps pulling my back too.

arrrrrggggghhhhhhh

looks like i'll be tooing and throwing all weekend.

But I do admit the Samsung is a damn good phone.

networks dont tend to do it but most shops will try and add some on your bill if your not careful, tbh your better getting some from your bank or own insurer as it will save you a few quid in the long run.

Defo try your bank, I know TSB has something.

O2/Orange both certainly have insurance you can add onto your contract which will cover most eventualities.

Because I'm off to Africa for the month so 1) wont be able to use it and 2) don't want it destroyed by any rogue wildlife

East Africa. Going to Tanzania and Zanzibar.
Unlike you I do not have an African sim, I currently have a PAYG from Orange. Besides I don't want to buy it, take it away and then end up breaking it! I'd rather play it safe and wait until I'm back in the UK so I have time to fiddle and get to know it properly

Aaron
17-07-10, 14:50
Fair enough.. I'm in Zambia for a few weeks - I just get a PAYG sim card over there from Zaim (the main mobile company), and it works out very cheap. Texts to the UK are about 6p, which is pretty good.

The mobile coverage near towns, and even in the bush is pretty good considering where you are!

Anyway Curious if anyone else has rooted there's yet? I did mine same day and just converted the Internal SD to NAND, The main phone programmes load tons quicker and you dont get any stalling either.

Didn't think I'd say this at all but my iPhone's becoming more redundant as the Samsung is so much quicker now :(

I've never understood this. I'm kinda a phone noob if you will. What is rooting the phone? Does it void the warranty? and if it makes it so much faster why doesn't samsung do it out the box?
Also, one more question. Can you "un-root" a phone?

advanced task killer - very handy and does what it says.
3g watchdog - allows to monitor your data usage and set limits with it.

a neat app - if you like the astro side of life, if the google skies app and it fun(ish)

ron burgundy - and now you can listen to ron say "i'm ron burgundy, go f%^& yourself san dego".......classic :D

so many to browse though. had my galaxy for a few days now and still getting used to it a bit, not least missing the odd few phone calls as i was still listening for my old phone :knock:

Well with some luck HTC Desire HD should be out by then, bigger screen 4.3" better camera 8MP, bigger memory 4GB + microsd to increase even further, android 2.2 by default.

marsey99
12-08-10, 13:29
on paper the samsung wins all day and it was on my shortlist when i went out to play with a few, along with the n900, sony x10 and hd2.

it just didnt feel as nice in my hand when i was using it. its hard to explain. it was the same with the n95 too, it like the desire feels like a quality piece of hardware when you hold it and some phones feel like plastic toys. idk i just thought i could use the desire to smash the galaxy (and the sony tbh) and the desire (the hd2 too) would still work fine afterwards without a scratch.

thats what i would say is the best thing to do, i have taken phones as "upgrades" in the past as on paper they where better but when they turn it i have been like, hmm yea i will break this in 2 weeks and then just sold them on and stuck with the n95.

with a phone you need to get it in your hand before you can make your mind up on it.

if i was you i would consider hanging on till the new nokia x9 comes out next month as thats the only phone i can see that might make me sell this.

none yet...
haven't really had a chance to get one.
I went to best buy to have a play with both (I've already played with a mates desire quite a bit) but the sammys they had were only locked into a demo mode (apparently by order of samsung... best buy weren't allowed to show it fully operational... smelled a bit of BS there but at the end of the day they wouldn't demo it...) but i got to pick up and play with the samples they had.

^^^ this is exactly what i thought.
my E71 is one of the most solidly built phones i have ever laid my hands on, and though the desire is plastic, it feels solid and well built. the galaxy sample i tried felt like a lightweight plastic toy.

also the galaxy was slightly bigger than the desire which is a -ve for me as I don't want a phone bigger than my E71. the desire is virtually the same size as the E71.

really it'll come down to once i get my hands on a working galaxy that will seal the deal

HTC Desire was a lovely feeling phone in the hand, nice and solid, had a black one from orange and it looked good too.

Decided to sell it on fleabay and went for a Galaxy S, although I was tempted by the iPhone4 but im not a great fan of the apple iOS tbh so the sammy won out.

I'm curious; i'm thinking about getting an android phone soon, and the Desire and the Galaxy S seem the obvious choices. Why do you think the desire wins out over the Galaxy? Going on specs alone, the Galaxy S seems the better choice.

The Desire has a much better front end to the OS, the widgets work better and it is more responsive. Have a look at techradar's review of them both. Techradar are the vest review site I think for phones - they really put them through the mill.

Then again, I have to say I haven't held either and maybe that does make a difference as someone says. I buy Samsung for my AV, monitors, drives etc and think they are normally top notch - propably the only brand I have real loyalty to over the years. But my experience with the i8510 and their "forget it exists once its out the door" has put me off ever buying a phone from them. There is nothing worse than being locked into a contract for 2 years and knowing that they will never ever fix anything on it. I'm now near the end of two years and after reading about some annoying glitches on the Galazy S I won't be buying it. I susepct I would be stuck with the problems while the samsung engineers are off working on the new phones. The annoying thing was the bug that everyone was stuck with was real real easy 2 min fix for Samsung.

It's a pity as I really like the extra screen size. I would love to be reassured and buy the Galaxy S, but once bitten, twice shy.

However the Galaxy S is an Android phone, so even if Samsung completely abandon it, Google wont' abandon Android, and a rooted galaxy S will be able to run many flavours of Android going forward.

I uderstand your concerns but without using the galaxy you have no idea how good it actually is. The front end os is down to preferance and the galaxy is the more powerful of the 2 phones. I have the galaxy and prefer the os on the galaxy but thats because i came from the iphone and its very similiar and easy to use as the iphone.

Dont critisise something without having ever used it.

Well I have been reading for over an hour now, and with the 2.2 update things do look better for the Galaxy S. I'm tempted... but just reading TEchradars comparison of the Galaxy S, Desire and Iphone 4 (I would never want an iphone 4 btw) and they seem pretty conclusive on it.

I have until november to decide. Maybe I will take a trip to the local shop (perish the tought - RL shopping - eeeeek!) I *want* to like the Samsung more as I normally just love samsung, but watching the video of the two the menu on the samsung does drag a bit. And the lack of facebook/twitter integration would really annoy me. Plus no flash until they update to 2.2 and that still hasn't happened yet for 3 (I will be sticking with 3 - by far the best data network).

Keep talking to me - I want to be persuaded ;)
