As the title says, I am in serious need of some cooling in my computer. I currently have an AMD Athlon 64 3000+ 754 socket with the default heatsink and fan. I recently installed a new fan in the case and thats lowered the temp to 60 from about 66. The temp can rise to 68 when I'm playing games, plus I'm upgrading soon which will add more heat into the mix. What do you guys recommend I do?

From memory the 754's do run a tad warm but over 60 idle is cause for concern imho. What case fans do you have?? You say you installed a new case fan and it lowered temps by 6c this is quite an improvement so it could just be case throughput of air is lacking?? Remove the side panel on the case and if the temps drop to normal (say 40ish) then this could well be the case (no pun intended) and get more air flowing through the case by adding more / more powerful case fans, or you could upgrade the cpu cooler.

This would be a decent option (http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Components/Fans%2C+Heatsinks%2C+Coolers/Socket+A%2C+478%2C+939%2C+754%2C+940/+Zalman+CNPS9500-LED?productId=23397)

Or this if the above is a bit to expensive (http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Components/Fans%2C+Heatsinks%2C+Coolers/Socket+754%2C+939%2C+940/+Arctic+Cooling+Freezer+64+PRO+PWM?productId=25586 )

Thanks, I'm gonna try a few things like repositioning my base unit and trying with the case open first, then if those dont work I'll buy a new heatsink, probably the top one like you suggested. :)

I've only got 1 HDD, and yeh the cables are all over the place. I've taken the side off and put the base unit next to a window, and its now about 7c cooler (36 to 43 and 53 to 60). Next iIll bundle up the cables and see if that helps any more.

I recommend removing the heatsink and fan.

Clean out and grit from then fan and wipe off the thermal compund off the processor and heatsink.

Re-Apply some new thermal compound, and make sure the heatsink is in place and secure.

:D

Do i not need a new heatsink then?

Well try cleaning out this one first and applying some new thermal paste.

Example - The other day we had a old Socket A computer in the office, was running ok but the processor was around 55c - 60c.

I removed the Fan, and processor, wiped them both clean with some toilet roll, cleaned the fan from grit and dust then applied some new thermal paste.

Made sure the fan was securely in place and the temps dropped to around 32c idle.

Cleaning helps

Nice one dude 8)

Remember to only put on a small blob, and give the heatsink/fan a good cleaning aswell.

Hmm confuzzled, you sure its IDLEing at 60c?? those figures you make it sound like its LOADing at 60c?

If it's loading at 60c i would just do as mentioned reapply paste etc etc.
