If its just as a one off, download a trial of something like sony vegas and use that to crop the video? You can also use that to join the avi's together.. And if you need to do it more than once, I dont think that the basic version of Vegas is very expensive either.

Infact, I hear its VERY cheap if you use that place i showed you the other day...
