The specs of my rig are as follows:

i7 920 (OC@3.6GHz)
2x2GB RAM (OC@1600MHz)
GA-X58A-UD3R (REV. 1.0)
8600GT 256MB
WD Caviar Black 640GB x 1pcs
WD Caviar Blue 500GB x 1pcs
DVD R/RW x 1pcs
Case fan 120mm - 3pcs
Titan Fenrir V2's stock fan

If the computer is running at full load (e.g. Prime95), how much power that my system will consume?

Thanks.

About 275 - 325W

351W is recommended according to this: http://extreme.outervision.com/PSUEngine

Minimum of 301W it claims.

A 400W power supply would have no problem with that

Aaron

That calculator reckons my system is between 442-492w...

Will
07-07-10, 16:19
I'm surprised at that, didn't think it would be that much..

Mines alot more power hungry and I'm getting told 436W-486W

That doesn't make sense?

Mine is 268 watts apparently.

well yours is less and less powerful. Whats not to make sense :p

My thoughts too..

Shall we say it requires less power to do the same thing?

Hmm, it didn't come out right. Not quite what i meant but hey. to me, this is early morning, I didn't get out of bed until 2.30ish so I'm still a little bit blurry eyed.

just don't forget that a psu will deteriate and requires 100W more after a couple of years working.

Aaron
07-07-10, 17:22
Thats ok.. My 492w + around 100w still leaves me with around 300w to play with :)

Me! AWAKE! You forget I'm a teenager dont you :chairfall:

ERm, i meant was that your systems shouldn't require more than an i7 system and i was just giving my systems requirements per that website as something to compare them along. By doing so, it would be easier to see a definitive correlation between systems of different capabilities and their respective power consumption.

Is that better?

Aaron
07-07-10, 17:47
Well, it doesnt just take into account the CPU, motherboard and RAM..

I have 6 hard drives, a GTX280, 4 fans etc etc.. They all add up - the 280 and the Hard Drives add quite a bit! :)

Ahh true, see what type of post i put up in the early hours of the, erm, afternoon...?

I generally prefer to work my psu's around 50% on max load. Most PSU's are more efficient there.

For the OP I think about 200-250.

I have a similar system and run around 170 idle and about 190 under load or something...certainly is very low and doesn't increase much when I put load on it.

That a power meter or the stupid calculator thing?

wonderlust

on the calculator my sig system is suppose to need 477w min and 527w PSU!

On a power meter it puls 307w under load from the wall

Where did you get your power meter measure thing from?

My dad had got one but according to it, the wii uses 200watts when turned off, and my pc uses 900w when on... :L

my comp does 270-280w idle and 495-505w under 100% load so my little meter thing tells me

Mind to take a snapshot of your power meter? I'm curious too... Thanks.

Snap...although mine is a 'Paget Trading Ltd 9149', I got mine from Lidl. They randomly do them and are usually about £10 a piece. :)

I'll plug mine in and get a shot of it and list my specs with it in a bit, I'm sure it uses very little power compared to what the calculator says it should.

Right, ok, this is at idle on desktop, running the following...

Firefox
Windows Live Mail
Windows Live Messenger
Skype
X-Chat
iTunes

http://i676.photobucket.com/albums/vv126/InvG/DSC_9379.jpg

Ignore the decimal point and small numbers, the Wattage being used is the large numbers, so 110W.

I'll do one of it under load playing BC2 or something later.

Specs are as follows:

i7 920 at stock
Gigabyte EX58-UD3R
G.Skill Eco 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3
Asus CuCore 5770
1.8TB of HDD space spread across 4 drives
2x120mm case fans
Enermax Modu 82+ 625W

Putting that lot into the calculator brings back a slightly higher value than I'm using. :p

How reliable is the meter?

InvaderGIR

Seems to coincide with other electrical items stated power draws. :)

178W is insane?

The small numbers are some other thing, not the wattage.

Hi InvaderGIR... like the "snapshots" very much... if you're free, mind to post one reading when the system is loading with LinX, or Prime95? Thanks.

Sure thing, here are some tests I've just run, all these values are the higher ones I saw whilst running these tests.

Prime95
http://i676.photobucket.com/albums/vv126/InvG/DSC_9381.jpg
223W

Intel Burn Test
http://i676.photobucket.com/albums/vv126/InvG/DSC_9389.jpg
217W

Prime95 & Intel Burn Test
http://i676.photobucket.com/albums/vv126/InvG/DSC_9385.jpg
227W

Heaven Benchmark
http://i676.photobucket.com/albums/vv126/InvG/DSC_9394.jpg
184W

1080p HD Video
http://i676.photobucket.com/albums/vv126/InvG/DSC_9397.jpg
128W

As I only use my PC for videos and occasional gaming I have to say I don't use much power as it'll stay below 200W, which does make my 625W PSU a bit overkill. :p

It does seem that the use of the CPU being loaded up has more of an effect on my power usage than cranking up the GPU...I expected it to be the other way round really, but there we go. :)
