View Full Version : The Aria Metal Thread

Ok, so I've had a search and can't seem to find any threads discussing the heavier side of music. Surely I can't be the only metalhead on here? :p

I love most types of music, but Metal has always remained a firm favourite of mine for the past 10 years or so.

So I thought I'd create this thread so that my fellow metal lovers and myself can discuss all that is to do with this glorious genre :weeee

I'll start off by saying that I'm currently listening to Sonata Arctica, and that I think they're awesome. I'm going to Bloodstock this year and they're playing, and I can't bloody wait :D

TheMadDutchDude

Metallica, Iron Maiden, A7X, Killswitch and more. Metallica has to be my favourite at the moment though.

Pancake
02-07-10, 21:55
Metalllica, Slayer, Guns 'N Roses, Korn, Drowning Pool.

As well as some Dr Dre and B.I.G :D

At the moment I'm into In Flames and Disturbed but most of my music library is metal.

One of my favourite bands at the moment is Sylosis.

I've seen them live twice and both times they've blown me away.

A lot of the stuff mentioned early on in this thread is light music.

Death Metal > that lot.

I like so much music it's hard to classify different genres these days really, but I do love a bit of death metal every now and then. Went and saw Decapitated live as well as Phasm and a couple of other supporting artists. Good stuff. :D

Lately though I've mostly been in the mood for lighter things like Five Finger Death Punch, and the occasional American Head Charge album. :clap

DragonForce is NOT metal. Prog Rock.

i have to disagree, dragonforce are definately not rock, the are definately metal regardles of your views on them.. got a bit sick of them after a while but theyre still good fun ;D i like to call them W**k metal aka power metal

alcest are french too, post metal, shogaze is awesome.

sunn(((o are awesome as is boris ;D

personally im not really find of 'faster louder, deeper harder' = heavy as tbh its not, i find the crushing sounds of doom metal far heavier than brutal death not that i use that as a justification to liking something. i like all metal except sweaty hairy man metal ;D which is a bit gay

hmm i thought this was METULZ

not 'metal' by the HMV definition.. but maybe i am mistaken

InvaderGIR

I like anything that's good. ;)

I like DF, but they just aren't metal, they are much more prog rock than they are metal, but they also aren't really prog rock, they are in a bit of a vague area really if I'm honest.

I like all music, apart from Metallica, Iron Maden and squealy retard pop....which makes my music collection look rather odd and in some areas gay.

I'm more a fan of stuff like Sybreed, FFDP, Killswitch and all that than I am for true heavy/death stuff though. I enjoy it but it does bore me a bit.

Last few days mind I've been on the true prog rock, Dream Theatre, Ayreon and the likes of them, had some DF on too and it does fit with some of DT's heavier stuff certainly.

I3R0K3N7FEET
03-07-10, 00:42
hahhaa i didnt want to say it but i HATE metallica and iron maiden and slayer too ;D

haha

sybreed are awesome ;D

though recently im big into post rock, noise and electronic stuff like crystal castles and chiptune

metal on its own is pretty drab after a while

Metal was my first love, got passed Queensryche: Operation Mindcrime and Metallicas' Justice for All leant to me at 14 and almost instantly grew long hair and bought a denim jacket (With a Megadeth Peace Sells back patch amongst others).
1st Concert was Iron Maiden.
Bit out of the scene and more into Hip Hop and Folk these days tho, will have to check out some of the stuff above...

I couldn't remember the 'correct' genre, as I like so much stuff it all blurs into one so as far as I'm concerned music genres go something like this:

Pop
Rock
Metal
Classical
Drum and Bass
Dance/Trance

And that's about all the classifications I have for music, I don't really classify into subgroups like 'nu metal', 'power metal' etc. :p

I like DF's older stuff, but not heard any newer stuff, some artists just don't interest me enough to get their new music.

In Flames are good, older stuff is anyway, I seem to recall their newer stuff was a fair bit lighter than their older stuff.

Metallica, slayer, sepultura, soulfly, biohazard, iron maiden, ac dc, system of a down, slipknot, disturbed, killswitch, korn, badbrains, DRI, rammstein, Dark Tranquility are a few of my fav's. And let's not forget Black Sabbath my all time heroes.

whts the 'worst' band you have seen live? name and shame?

for me it was Nevermore... but i felt really sorry for them because i have a feeling it was all down to VERY bad sound engineering, i was frankly embarassing to watch...

Gav
23-07-10, 21:18
Hmm, that's tricky, as I've seen a LOT of bands, good and bad haha.

Most disappointing I'd have to say Dragonforce. I've seen them 8 times now. The first time I saw them was mindblowing, they put on such a good show live, and were note perfect with everything they played. Everytime I've seen them since though they've just been progressively going down hill, up until the 8th time I saw them when I walked out of the gig after the second song in disgust, they were like a bunch of drunken teenagers slapping their instruments about on stage.

Sylosis and Sabaton supported them on their last tour, and I bought a ticket, watched those two and left before Dragonforce even came on stage. That would have been my 9th viewing haha.

Was pretty disappointed with Insomnium at Bloodstock last year too, they were pretty dire live.

These guys have kind of intrigued me since they won Eurovision back in '06 I think it was.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tkw4jhDE1eQ

What's the general concensus? Should they be considered any less credible musically because of the costumes?

Seems to me (middle aged blokes opinion coming up) that they do what they do pretty well, as in banging out a good old fashioned rock song whilst bringing back a bit of fun and entertainment into the industry which seems to take itself far too seriously these days.

I think I've inadvertantly become a fan, although I can't help feeling it's a guilty pleasure :o

Gav
22-09-10, 08:11
Merged with the Metal thread as it didn't really justify it's own thread.

They're all right I guess. I liked them a long time before they even appeared on the Eurovision, and then started to dislike them once everyone wouldn't shut up about them. Their latest stuff is very lackluster compared to their earlier stuff IMO.

Dodge1965
22-09-10, 08:27
oops thx Gav, didn't realise there was a metal thread :o

Yea, tbh I didn't really pay them much heed early on as I'd always seen them compared to Gwar and Gwar really leave me cold.

I guess it's akin to the old Metallica pre/after the black album argument. I think bands just naturally change over time though as they progress musically. Theres always going to be the original fans that feel let down as the band develops and changes. I think as they improve technically, they inevitably lose the rawness that won them acclaim in the first place. Metallica are probably the best example of this, although I actually liked their later stuff a lot. Except for St Anger, the snares just sounded like Lars was building a shed all the way through.

Gav
22-09-10, 08:42
GWAR are ok. I saw them in August at Bloodstock. They put on a really good stage show, which was really quite funny to watch, but there's no way I'd listen to them on CD lol.

Metallica are terrible these days. They don't even follow your argument about bands that have improved technically losing the rawness, as they've just gone down hill more and more technically every album since ...And Justice For All. Compare that album to the Black Album, it's not even in the same ballpark.

Dodge1965
22-09-10, 11:56
Hmmm, I dunno. Sure their later stuff was very different, it just wasn't what their fans wanted. (Maybe losing Cliff Burton changed the sound, I dunno). I really liked load and reload though, you just had to accept it for what it was and not wish it had been something else (if that makes any sense). It's like Sabbath changing from Ozzy to Dio, AC/DC from Scott to Johnson etc, totally different sound but both were pretty good so why compare when you can enjoy the variety of both?
All bands change immensely over time, Maiden with the departure of Paul Di'anno (although granted, since then they've been virtually playing the same thing over and over again lol.) Scorpions changed immensely over time. Priest are probably the truest to their original sound that I can think of now that Halfords back.

Ooh, citylink just arrived with my copy of FFXIV, time to stop rambling. That's my afternoon gonna be wasted LOL. (I was canny and bought the Mrs a copy too).

Technically, they have gotten worse though. Listen to the tight guitar work on Blackened, off ...And Justice for All, and then compare it to crap like Enter Sandman and whatnot off the Black album. It's not even in the same league.

Yea, but you can't be that good and then just not be. The only difference was Newstead in for Burton so maybe that was what made the difference. I guess if you think about it, when Newstead left and Trujillo came in, that's when St Anger came out, a totally different sound again.

It surprises me greatly though that a change in bass players can change a bands sound to such a great extent.

I still can't agree that they were suddenly less technically gifted, they just evolved, now wether for the better or worse, that's the age old argument and it's down to personal taste really.

Trujillo didn't play on St. Anger though. He came into the band after all the bass parts had been written and recorded by someone else (Their manager I believe). The only album he's recorded on for them is Death Magnetic.

I never said they were less gifted. They can still play all the stuff live with no worries, they just sold out and started recording mainstream rock music. I mean come on, Nothing Else Matters?

They made crappy rock songs for Black Album/Load/Reload when rock was cool, and then when Nu-Metal was cool, they decided to detune their guitars to Drop-C, like other Nu-Metal acts at the time and made St. Anger.

As much as it pains me to say it, they're just in it for the money these days, and will record what's cool at the time.

It saddens me to think they'll never bring out another album as good as Master of Puppets and ...And Justice For All, but that's just the reality of the situation.

Ahh yes, of course. Still a different bass player though rather than Newstead. (I remember now from the some kind of monster/Hetfield Drama Queen movie lol).

Yes I totally agree that they changed and went more mainstream, but then really, who can honestly say they wouldn't do the exact same thing given the opportunity to step up from a venue band to arena fillers? You can't really hold that against anyone. It's human nature. Of course you don't have to like it, but likewise you don't have to dislike it just because what they did goes against the grain. Some liked them less for it, some liked them more, just a difference of musical tastes, not a reflection on the bands ethics or abilities. Swings and roundabouts to the actual band.

OK you could argue that bands like Maiden and Priest stuck to their guns and are doing ok, but they are currently riding on a resurgence, mixed with new fans and nostalgic old gits like me. In their heyday they were stuck playing mediocre local venues and festivals such as Donnington MOR. I am inclined to think that Metallica maybe got too big too soon and simply grabbed the opportunity that the others at a comparable time in their careers never had. Queen did it, Springsteen did it etc etc. Inevitably none were ever the same again, but by doing so were very sucessful commercially. I wouldn't call it selling out, just a consequence of money and fame, which is why most people become musicians after all. You can pretty much point to a particular album in any really big bands career and say 'That's where they sold out.' It's inevitably the point where they hit the big time and original fans become resentful because their idold found the formula to success which was different to their starting out material.

Nothing else matters for all intents and purposes is a pretty good power ballad, just because Metallica did it, it gets slated, yet why shouldn't they? A good song is a good song to someone that likes it, regardless of who records it. Much rather a band does that than bang out the same old for 30 years ala Quo. Even Priest did ballads, such as diamonds and rust, yet thats considered a priest classic, weired how what works for one doesn't work for the other with their fans. Thin Lizzy did many a ballad, even AC/DC did a ballad, Ride On, think it was on the original High Voltage or TNT album. Take any of the bigger 70's/ 80's rock bands and compare their early stuff to their later stuff and there's a million miles of difference 9 times out of 10, yet Metallica fans won't accept that kind of musical variance for some reason.

I suspect, in a roundabout way we are agreeing here, just with a different outlook on it .

Bloody FFXIV is taking forever to patch
