the G6950 is an epic processor
see:
http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/cpus/2010/06/24/intel-pentium-g6950-cpu-review/1

executive summary, 2.8GHz to 4.6 on air, and seemingly limited by the MOBO not the CPU

future is looking good for 32nm hardware :)

now when can we expect some mid/highrange chips :)

The i3 530 beats it though, just, but its only £15 more and you get hyperthreading and turbo boost.

4.6 of air! :D

Gonna be mine I think :D

Why did they even make the G6950?

Same as a lot of CPUs

i think the main reason they created the g6950 is to test out the manufacting process before using it on higher end products also it does have a built in gpu so that will probarbly be alot of use to people who are putting together hptc's or sffpc's

Why not? :p

fill a gap in their line up.

high over clocking i1 G6950

high over clocking i3 530

It doens't look very good considering a lower clock Athlon II can match it in gaming.
In other things, it looks equal clock for clock, but at the clock it can reach, better.

smart move by intel, these will be filling the dell office boxes for the next few years imo.

Here's a review comparing the intel to amd equivalent:

Someone liked their CPU by the looks of it.

Right now 4GHz was always the clock speed to reach.

With 32nm I can see that become 4.5GHz or maybe even 5GHz.

seems like a great chip for the money

just a little bit too close to the i3 530 at the moment price wise, maybe if it dropped so the difference was more £20 it might be worth it but not as it currently stands

I was seriously considering this chip, But I had promised myself a quad for ages so went for the i5 760 instead.

The G6950 is an awesome chip tho.

To be completely honest, the E8600 clocked up to 4.5GHz on air so it really isn't much of an improvement. The one I was using clocked up to 4.5 using 1.37v.

When we can hit 5GHz on air that will be a nice :) at a 24/7 voltage

The E8600 was no where near to £75 though.

No, about 3x the price.:chairfall:

..and a different architecture. (i'm assuming the G6950 is faster clock for clock?)

Not sure it will happen, chips will get faster but that doesnt mean the MHZ has to go up, just a better architecture can make all the difference.

Its just number hunters that need to see the mhz keep going up.

ie. @ 3ghz i7 would kill a 3ghz C2D quad when used in real time like video rendering ect.

As the transistor size gets smaller that should help overclocking too

had a little play with one of these last week, did 4.62GHz with ease on a gigabyte h55 motherboard, nice chips but a little too close to the i3 530 price wise

Exactly, they need to be around £55 - 60, not £75 -80 the same as the i3 530.

I wonder how the overclocked performance compares to an overclocked i3 530!

Considering as Wayne mentioned the very close pricing, this is something that should of been in the review tbh.

at stock the G6950 gets a whopping in majority of tasks, will be different when overclocked though, ...unleashing the beast within and all
