View Full Version : Paypal Chargeback
I've never had any Paypal troubles (yet!) and use it to send and receive payments often, but I see the term Paypal Chargeback a lot, and that I might be subject to it. Paypal's site isn't the easiest when looking for info on how things work, does anyone know what this is?

Basically you sell something, someone pays for it. Theyrecieive it and all is confirmed. You then decide to throw out your receipt of post as they have confirmed getting the item and hve emailed you perhaps. A month passes and then they claim they haven't recieved it and ask paypal for the money back, paypal take the money and give them it back. They then ask you to provide proof that it's sent etc and you can't because your receipt is gone! All you have is an email in eBay saying thanks etc and paypal won't accept that! You end up with no product and no money.. They end up with both.
Paypal claims to protect you against fraud but they clearly don't... In reality they help it!
I have had this happen and was stung for £250 + an iPhone. I then had it happen again and even with receipt of post and proof they had the product paypal still gave the money to the fraudster! I have since left paypal alone and have gone to no win no fee solicitors as the so called system set to protect you does quite the opposite! Doubt anything will come of it as paypal is huge a bs probably a massive bullying organisation at heart.
Moral is.. Buy in person and take cash on collection!

I've been stung by this to, only on a small item (about £35) so it wasn't even worth chasing but you really need to watch it. I think that the customer has something like 3 months to withdraw the payment !
Ouch. I guess it's worth scanning in a copy of the receipt.
I consider myself lucky that it hasn't happened to me yet.
This is also 1 of the main reasons why Aria don't use paypal too.
What a terrible Paypal option then, if this is the case, weird? So the moral is, if you use Paypal (and you have to really, if selling on ebay), then keep all your postage receipts.

yes! And even then it may not work... youll need recorded ones as a minimum and as I found out, that means sweet FA to these people.
Andy
Did you have any Paypal troubles before this happened to you, any poor feedback, or whatever. I find it hard to believe that they will do this so flippantly.
If you have the required receipt of delivery then a CCJ is pretty easy to take out on someone I believe. Not sure how much it costs but if the amount owed is a few hundred then this could be worth it as it takes it out of Paypal's hands

100% feedback mate. Wasnt impressed.

I wouldn't be impressed either, I'm amazed at how dodgy this seems.

its 40 days if they go thorugh paypal. it a shoocking 1 year if they claim it from they credit card company!
Actually, a buyer has 45 days I think, to begin a dispute. So, this 'chargeback', is that the same thing as opening a dispute?

That is indeed how it starts :(
Andy
I hate Paypal. I never use them

It was a while ago it happened to me but I don't think there was even a dispute. Shortly after the item was delivered I received an email stating that the buyer had withdrawn the payment, much like the email you get when you have received money but the other way around. They just then ignored any attempts I made at contact.
i try not too, but thats where my money is atm :( damnit... well some of it is on its way to my bank account ;p
I only ever post recorded delivery.
My girlfiend make the mistake of sending a GPU 2nd class standard and the guy claimed i hadn't sent it, took me for £88.
So many con men on Ebay and Paypal suck at doing anything decent to help anyone out. Seems like it is a conmans paradise!

Paypal stitched me up for £300 (PLUS £75 it cost me in bank charges) then tried to justify what they had done and refused to reimburse me.
Now I only use them when I have no choice (item only available from someone who will only accept Paypal).
I would rather pay 50% extra than use them!!
sometimes as a seller you no choice but to offer paypal
i can see why buyers use them becuase paypal will 99% of the time take your side

Did she not obtain a proof of postage still though?
Proof of postage is unfortunately not proof of delivery.

prey-pal has and always will be crap! in every definition of the word, and ebay own it, thus why you are forced to offer it when selling (they want 2 sets of fees from you) i have seen auctions with paypal listed and the seller then states "my paypal account is frozen, do not send money there you will lose it" (in reality they have closed or emptied the bank account attached to it, and never intend using paypal ever again) but those auctions tend to get removed fairly quickly
I have had big troubles with paypal...
I accepted a payment of 200 in a dollars balance.
The guy wanted a refund...i refunded using a pounds balance which then gave me a negative pounds balance.
I went to move the dollars balance into the pounds balance to fix it...
My dollars balance dissapeared as paypal took it away due to "suspicious activity" so i was left with a minus pounds balance they have been chasing me for the past 3-4 years now.
I will refuse to do business with them ever again.

I probably guess that for forum sales, using gift feature, that is probably the safest time to use it, no-one here is likely to do a charge back for no reason etc etc

even if they did what would happen if you say it was a gift there not having it back

 true ... i over looked that basic fact !
Proof of postage is unfortunately not proof of delivery.
That's right, but Paypal often ask for proof that you've sent it, not that it's been delivered.
