View Full Version : 5970 + Arctic Cooling = 93Celsius

Hello there, this is my first post on this forum and I need some help please :D

I replaced the 5970 Sapphire stock cooler with this http://www.quietpc.com/gb-en-gbp/products/ati-vga/ac-acc-xtreme-5970
I was aware of the problems that the cooler may cause to 5970 cards (as you can see here http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1515486 ) so I did not tighten the screws to 100% but to 20-maybe-30% (as suggested here http://www.arctic-cooling.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=2_0&mID=545&page=support) But the thing is that now HW Monitor reads some fantastic temperatures when under load (91-93C for GPU, +100C for the Volterra chip etc). I'm ... not happy , to say the least, the official suggestion from Arctic Cooling is "... the screws should not be tightened too much." OK, how much is 'too much'?

When the card is not under load the temps are normal (around 40Celsius), the card is not oc'ed. I have a Coolermaster Cosmos case, so plenty of space inside.

Any advice would be very much appreciated.

Hmmmmm basically sounds like a case of keep tightening then slightly more, until you get a good temp

but making sure you dont bend the x plate

I think Dave at Vortez reviewed this and came to the conclusion that the cooler is well and truly rubbish.

Custom pc reviewed it and came to the same conclusion I think.. their 5970 didnt work after testing iirc.

I think because is probably the same cooler used by Sapphire on their 4Gb Toxic version. But that is a custom PCB, with some low profile parts on it, it may be touching something or worse. I`ve seen on the forums people talking about burning their cards because of that cooler and RMA them, second DVI output not working, etc.
I have no problem with my 4870x2 and AC Xtreme on it(for a year now), but that`s a different card.
You should look very carefully and see if it doesn`t touch(pressurize) anything wrong in there.

Issue is with that cooler your VRMs get VERY hot VERY fast which subsiquently ruins OC potential and as a result strains the GPU in to getting hotter... Just a bit of a half thught design im affraid! I suggest some small sinks for the vrms

update: RMAed the AC cooler and ordered another one but the temps are still high.

Now, in truth, the last week has been pretty hot here but I don't think this is a good excuse.

Using the CCC I increased the fan speed to 100% and now the temps are around 80C for GPU and around 90-max100C for Volterra with the case CLOSED when under load. When idle the temps are around 40-45C. Also added 2 x 12cm fans in the 5.25 bays (pull & push) which cooled down the case even further but not enough. I have a Coolermaster Cosmos 1000 which is a pretty large case but not the best for air-flow.

@stawte - same for me, I was very happy with AC on my old 4870X2 that's why I bought a similar cooler for 5970.

@Andy - the card was not oc'ed and I'm not interested in oc'ing it.

Something is definitely wrong and I'm running out of ideas .... :fail:crash::censored:

Water cool it?

Its always been a pretty hot GPU and in summerish temps are gonna be 10 - 15C higher.

hmmm ... I was afraid that it will come to this :p

As I have absolutely no experience in water cooling (well, except a Corsair H50) are there any water cooling kits out there for 5970 cards? something fool proof like the Corsair thing? :p :)

tbh i would like to see a h50 used on a graphics card. would be very interesting.

but any way this is the reason why i don't recommender after market coolers unless they are factory applied.

Water block is about £70.
Pump and res combo, £40
Radiator £50
Fittings, tubing, coolant, fans, £40.

Gonna cost about £200, but you could add your CPU into the loop as well, make it worthwhile, lol.

all right, so as El Wayneo suggested (many thanks), I'm planning to go down on the water cooling route ...

I've done some research and I picked some components.
1. Aquacomputer Aquastream XT USB 12V Pump-Ultra Version
2. XSPC Razor Full Cover Waterblock for ATI 5970 Grahics Card : Razor 5970
3. Hardware Labs Black Ice SR Series 280mm Dual Radiator : SR1 280
4. XSPC 5.25" Dual Drive Bay Reservoir
5. Koolance CPU-360 CPU Waterblock - uhmm, not sure about this one, it's not in stock, hard to find

I'm totally lost when it comes to tubes and fittings :p

Can anyone have a look and tell me if my future water-cooling kit 'holds water'? :D :) Any suggestions, recommendation will be very much appreciated.

mate i would take a look at Gilgameshs for sale thread,

http://forums.aria.co.uk/showthread.php?t=21205

See if theres anything on there, what your missing, ask him to see if he's got it.

He's a watercooling Guru, plus i'm sure it'll work out a bit cheaper.

Oh and you can't use all those links to competitors.

What case have you got?

Coolermaster Cosmos 1000

You gonna put the rad in the roof?

Eugenhelm
30-06-10, 09:53
yeah, on the inside, if a dual-radiator (2 x 14cm) is enough. There are only 2 spaces for 12/14cm fans on top of a Cosmos 1000.
But if a dual-radiator is not enough then I'll have to find another solution.
