Hi all,

I have a Digimate 19' LCD that went wrong and was fixed and now has gone wrong again...It's now out of warranty..

What do you think the average lifespan should be for a 19' LCD ?...

I was thinking somewhere around 45,000 - 60,000 hours, which with it on 24/7 works out at a lifespan of between 5.1 & 6.8 years...

However, it's not been on for 24/7 so you could argue that the same figures based on 8hrs a day would be a better gauge ?...

So that works out at between 15.4 and 20.6 years...

No one thinks that an LCD is going to last that long !...but the question is do you think it should have lasted at least a little more than 4 years 3 months ?...

Digimate are standing by their guns at the mo...

Comments ??

Cheers

UK statutory rights say that a product has to be free of manufacturing defects for a minimum of 6 years.. Now it sounds like yours has a problem which was there from the time you bought it, hence it being fixed once already, so it should fall within that 6 year timeframe. The problem is that it is up to you to prove the defect was there from day one, rather than the company disprove it. If you can do that, then you're on to a winner.. If you can't, then I wouldnt like to say which way it would go.

And to answer your original question, yes, I would hope my TFTs would last longer than 4 years :)

Well I've never had a TFT screen fail on me, the two on my desk at the moment are about 6 and 2 years old respectively. No problems with either.

My brother has a similar battle on with Haans G.

His monitor is only 18 months old and has broken for the second time.

Even though it has a 3 year warranty they are claiming that as its been fixed once, its only on a limited repaired warranty for 6 months.

Robbing buggers.

A lot to be said for buying Dell monitors :D

The only LCD of mine which has ever broken was a Dell :P.

That being said, it lasted 6 years or so, so no complaints here.

Like Apple's, they all come out of the same factories.

To some extent the individual parts do, yeah. But how they are put together plays a big part, as well as how rigorous the quality check procedures are, etc etc.

Strangely it came back to life today...but even so Digimate are not budging...won't be buying anything of theirs again ! and as I buy for my company I will make sure that we don't buy for us either !...

Since I am ordering 100 monitors next week, they won't be DGI or any of their associated brands !...

In many cases, the whole shebang comes out of a third party factory.

I have walked around production lines in Japan where they were churning out printers with both HP and Apple brands.

It is often said that Apple makes nothing. It is just expert at design.

If you look into the recent stories of suicides in China (http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/may/28/foxconn-plant-china-deaths-suicides), you will find one factory supplying just about every consumer electronics brand you care to name.

Yep Foxconn are massive and make pretty much anything with a circuit board. As to warranty I am pretty sure the EU legislation is a 2 year manufacturer warranty on new products, no more, no less. Any longer is covered by the Sale of Goods act which denotes any product sold should be of a fair quality and free from defects at time of supply. It all comes down to a reasonable lifespan baring in mind cost and type of product (not necessarily 6 years) and issues are to be taken up with retailers not manufacturers.

Digimate are an awful company, I've had dealings with them in the past and had to send back a monitor 5 - 6 times to get it repaired. Their monitors appear cheaply made as well, I know loads of people who have had problems and I've had two with issues.

Honestly avoid any company that uses a repair warranty, complete waste of time.

As for monitors lasting, I have a 5 year old 19" LG that is still going strong and a few others older.

There is a reason they are offering cheaper monitors, it's not just because you haven't heard of the brand. We must have 40 or so LCD's and are yet to have one pack in. Most are Dell or LG though :thumb:

Indeed, I know. You get what you pay for. I'm sticking with Dell for now.

I never realised this until I actually looked into importing products from China. Sent a couple of emails out to product suppliers and factories and ended up getting a generic production catalog for lots of consumer electronics products.

It's really amazing how many electronic goods are just rebadged, rebranded versions of the same components. It turns you off premium goods for a while, aside from the better warranties and nicer design.

personally I wouldn't touch a digimate screen with a long pole myself.

had 2 photo frames die within a week from them or maybe it was just the ugly faces killing them lol
