Hi,

I just got one of
these (http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Components/Drive+Bays/Network+Attached+%28For+IDE+Drive%29/+Aria+3.5%27%27+Alu+HDD+Caddy+w%2F+LAN%21?productI d=26099). and the transfer rate is terrible, to the point where it's unusable.

Anyone got one of these and got any useful tips to get it working correctly? - for example to transfer a 500Mb file took 15 minutes - reading it back takes even longer, and that's if it doesn't just give up.
If I can't get it working reasonably it will have to RMA
There don't appear to be any firmware updates for it

Only thing i can think of is you have it plugged into a usb port that is running usb 1, usb 2 should only take a few seconds (well a min tops) to transfer 500mb. I have a similar caddy and it only takes a few min to backup several gb of mp3s

Also if you have it plugged into a usb hub with other devices if one of those devices is usb 1 then it is quite possible that EVERYTHING plugged into the hub will be running usb 1 speeds too. My tip try a differnt usb port.

Im clutching at straws here, as it should be faster than that - but if you have it set up plugged into a router and then try and transfer files through a wireless connection, it will be alot slower too..

it is plugged in to a router, but i was doing the transfers via cable rather than wireless - though the plan is to use it wirelessly (if it's workable) in the future

There arent any settings on the router/computer/caddy that allow you to force the connection speed is there? Just wondering if something is maybe set to 10mb instead of 100mb?

What OS have you got? Because i found that Vista Lan transfer speeds are appauling, and i get 130k pc to pc transfer, which is ludicrous, seeing as i get 1meg download from the internet onto the same pc.

Hmm lan connection is slower than usb 2 (unless you have a GB setup and the caddy is capable of GB speeds) but even so unless you have a particularly busy lan it should still be faster than it is.

Have you tried it direct into a usb port to see if its the unit itself or a network issue?

vista on the laptop - and it is slow on there, but it's also slow on an xp machine.

will try it in a bit.

Ideally - how long would you guys expect it to take to download/upload a 0.5GB file on a wired network connection (bearing in mind it's a 100 mbit network)

Well i did a quick test and 450mb of mp3's, so lots of little files which i would expect to take longer than a single big file, took less than a minute over a 100mb connection from pc to pc. i would expect a networked storage device to be similarly quick, usb device to be a tad faster.

well usb is nice and quick

network is just painfully slow - even browsing to the directory is a painful task - I've tried to open the directory on the server and it's been siting there for about 10 minutes now, just waiting to open the directory.

This is on a vista laptop, using wireless - though it is (supposedly 54Mb) - I will try it on wired xp machine in a bit and see if it does the same

I have just bought one of the same things, and it is fine on USB, but on my wired 100M ethernet connection it is just unusable. I can see the thing in my network, but when I try to access it, it just seems to hang and I have to kill windows explorer. I am also using vista, so could it be a problem with vista? Did you ever find a fix, or did you go for the RMA?

I have one also.

I get speeds of 2 - 2.3MB/s which isnt miracle speed but it is ok.

It was unstable at first but now it has become more stable.
