Sweden: 100/100 fiber line around £10-25
UK: 100/100 dark fiber line around £500 If I recall correctly

Seems rather pathetic to me, no?

Sweden has rather poor connections outside of sweden though from what i remember from speaking to gamers i know in sweden. Means they get really high pings on most european gaming servers because of it.

I know a fair few swedish people who get excellent connections from servers in other parts of europe

yup, and everyone seems to thing this country is up-to-date with technology, not ruddy likely :)

and does that mean i can pay £500 and receive... nothing? :) dark fibre means its not being used :P

But yes, on the topic, our country is slacking behind, but then we are an island. Im sure we can upgrade to fibre, a few more billion on the nations debt wont hurt.

Is this the one you mean:

Once implemented, it's set to provide next-generation broadband to schools, libraries and offices in the area.

Yeh, this country isn't going anywhere particularly fast :clap

Oxford has fibre optic Internet. I used to live there about 15 years ago. Now I'm in Norfolk. Very often nearly the last county to ever upgrade, and we receive the smallest amount of Government funding in the country. It's also full of old people and there are only two escape routes.

All internet connections seem sooo slow since i had a server in a datacentre. That was at silly speeds :D

i find it funny how ISP's offer *speeds of upto 10/20/50mb yet we RARELY reach anything near those speeds.

would it be fair to put an asterisk when paying saying *pay upto the amount of £10/20/50?

until the country has an infrastructure that can fully support the speeds advertised, i believe it is unjust to advertise and charge customers for a service they arent able to recieve.

The key word is "upto". I think this is normally only on the adsl networks and not the cable ones, as depending how far from the exchange you are depends on speed etc. hence they only say upto.

Bit like unlimited internet package that vodafone did for their contact phones with a fair usage policy of 500mb :P

I had a staff deal (before moving house) with an ISP which offered a decent speed internet connection, however after a few days the speed dropped and it never recovered even after swapping some equipment and having some technicians out to investigate - the issue was never resolved and i could only use (at best) 40% of the speed i was "promised" by the sales person

Thought i'd chuck my 2 pence piece in the pile and show my opinion.

Norfolk, Great place, little tech. you live with what you get however in norwich, you can get broadband at 50mbps or so and free wifi in the town center.

where i am, we get 6mbps but in all actuality it's capped so hard, it turns out to be about 2.5mbps.

They're saying it's possible for you to get this speed but we wont try too hard.

Sale people do just that, sell things. Be careful, it's a great skill to have but they have so much power. you want this hat? no? well you do now, it has a built in wifi booster so you always get a great signal. see what i mean? it's just a tinfoil coated hat though. :P

Where I am, we pay for 8 Mbps and get 6, sometimes. And it's a good 7 miles to anywhere useful. And I have no use for the wifi in the city.

Yes, dark fibre. As you still need to pay for it to be connected to an exchange.

Adding a next gen broadband network cost to the nations debt, wouldnt be that bad as its needed, its key infrastrucutre that benefits both the private and public sectors.

We do know have a broadband minister though hopefully see some strong commitments from the goverment (proably wishful thinking)
