View Full Version : Any good ways to keep a heavily insulated room cool?

Well I got a fairly big room out of my extension... and this summer.. is making it unbearable.

My room is continuously over 25C even at night and in the mornings, and somehow it's really humid too...

I can't open my windows a lot because otherwise I get loads of insects as the climate is tropical... (I've already got a beetle and a huge moth -.-)

Also, not doing my PC any good...

And finally, it's GCSE time, I can't sleep in this humidity, and the wildlife wakes me up -.-

got 3 hours last night, and i've got an Economics exam tomorrow.

Ideas?

PS: I have 2 tower fans (used to have 3) continuously on full power.. and they don't seem to make a difference.. :(

since when is reading Tropical :p

The only other options if you cant open your windows would be desk fan , humidifier and / or an air cooler, all costing money Im afraid :/

it isn't, my room is somehow :S

it's really humid, and cause the room is big, and the fans are kinda really bad... airflow is terrible

all the desk fans will be doing is moving hot air around quicker, they won't be doing anything to solve the problem unless you find an exhaust or intake.

Treat your room as a giant pc case, you need intake and exhaust to cool. The £1 shop on friar street had some of the insect netting the last time I was in there, as someone else has said open a window and use some of that :)

He would need to still open a window to exhaust the heat from the cooler exchanger.

I have a southfacing bedroom and I'm forced to keep the curtains shut during the day to try and keep the heat out, then open at night with th window open to get a breeze, seems to work fairly well. If your room is well insulated it works both ways, the heat cant leave through the walls, but also can't enter through the walls, so focus on the windows as this is where most of it will be coming in

get one of those reflective silver things that people put in car windscreens to keep their car cool when it's parked and attach it to your windows/windows

Open the feckin door lol.

My room was boiling at midnight last night, even with my window wide open, slept well as I have a tower fan aswell and put that on medium almost directly next to my fase as I put it on an office chair next to my bed. Left it on continous and had a great night sleep :).

as others have said before get some sort of netting and put that around your windows while its wide open. that way you get no bugs and cool breeze.

i quite like that idea lol

or have it pumping through an array of metal tubes, with a fan behind the tubes

Be and man and open up the window. Last night, i has this weird beetle bug thing with wings on, i've never seen it before and the little S.O.A.B landed next to me on my pillow.

Al you do is go to the window and a "little" flick will send that "thing" into the abyss,

Move the family fridge freeze combi to your room and leave them open.

And trust me regardless of blinds, double glazing, wooden frames, bars on your windows w/e you can put some netting in the way.

But if you have blinds I'd shut them and leave the window open. Should stop most insects. My window has been open for hours and hours this past month and I have only gotten one wasp.

This wont work, any cool air will be negated by the heat from the cooling fins on the rear.

Air con unit, get a portable one.

Smifis

Air-con = Very expensive. windows is natures air con

Ice Tea

He would still need to open a Window for Portable Air con for the Exhaust tube.

I was about to mention that.

As for warm rooms, I have the same problem. My window is a little small (the bit that opens) so I was thinking of rigging some kind of DIY air con; fans blowing through a box with ice in it, that sort of thing. We have an auto ice maker so no ice shortage problems.

Sniperdude

I stick the tube out of the window on my aircon but am going to get someone to core drill a hole in the wall because after owning a aircon unit i couldnt live without it
this room is like an oven otherwise so its well worth me doing this .

but it will have to wait till i sort out some other things with this room (new desk tv wall bracket and stuff.)

Alex the air coolers that you can buy that you stick ice in are not very good but you can pick them up cheaply

Smifis
07-06-10, 06:37
Can't you drill your own hole? lol :)
