I am the Dad of the family and the most technically minded. I have to sort the kids and ex wife's computer stuff out. She usually buys silly things and regrets it afterwards.

Mine are ALL useless, the amount of calls/texts I get about stupid things is unreal.
the misses just switches off when I start talking about stuff.

kinda gets boring talking to yourself though. Probably why I end up on here so much lol

My dad is useless at comps, without me our computer would of be smashed from being thrown out the window long ago, as when he doesn't know how 2 do something he turns it into anger lol.

By big sister is rather able, the second knowledgeable out of my family.

My mum is better than my dad as she doesn't get angry when she cant do something so then can calmly find the solution.

And then there's me .

My parents are both retired... yet doing quite well with keeping upto date.
Dad, laptop, quite happily does 90% of stuff on his own, he's even on some forums.
Mum, Nintendo DS for christmas.. she used to play tetris on my gameboy when it first came out. They also have... dvd recorder, digital camera and sky+ and can use them all, both have out of date mobiles, mum can even send texts, dad's been known to send mms's before now too lol.

I've voiced my experiences of my family's computer knowledge so many times on here. :D Was hoping a more regular user would pick up on it and comment.

To put it simply, my family like to make up their own theories as to why a problem occurs and it's always my fault, despite the fact I'm the one that they always turn to to fix it afterwards. My brother insists that things go wrong intentionally, or that his computer which is only capable of running WoW is better than mine which runs GTA IV.

My sister has a fair idea of how to use a computer and occasionally has the presence of mind to tell me if the pc has a BSOD and what she was doing when it happened.

My parents on the other hand aren't so good. Whenever the antivirus starts scanning the computer goes a bit slow ( old p4 job) and to fix the slowness my dad holds the power button in and turns it back on again. He also doesn't understand why dvd's don't work if you use them as coffee coasters.

My mum spends most of her computer time turning the monitor on and of and wondering why the computer isn't turning on too.

My brother's pretty good because he's done bits and bobs and a few builds, but he's not up to date because it's not really his thing, my dad is okay but he has to have a set procedure and order to do things and what to click in very precise situations rather than being more adaptive and making educated guesses, and my mum's just plain useless :p

Mum is scared of facebook! She has just joined due to my aunt pestering her, but is very worried about people seeing what she is doing and getting her information. Even thouigh there is nothing on there! She has a laptop and can go on the net and use simple office apps, and can d/l puzzles on her DS which i put on the net for her.

Dad blames me whenever a problem occurs with his best friend, sorry, computer! If for any reason he cant use it he gets angry and must have a solution asap. He is quite confident using some more advanced applications due to things he does in life. However, he was convinced he couldn't change Internet provider on the grounds if he did he would loose his email account!

Sister, chose her laptop on the basis that it is pink! nuff said!

My mum doesn't even know how to use a pc, i did show her the basics and she seemed to get on quite well surfing the net. I think the bottom line is she just isn't interested in the slightest.

My old man lives on his pc but has very little idea how it works. He can do the basics, surf the net, bang out a letter on his word processor or play his chess program but thats about it. I have to upload his holiday photos, reinstall his chess program when an new version comes out.

So yeah they don't have much idea tbh.

@ Mr Strawberry: Ditto, pretty much.

My mum knows to just call for me when she doesn't understand something on the computer. She knows how to use the Internet and basic Explorer functions and Office, as well as a few games she plays. As far as many parents seem to go, she's actually quite tech-savvy!

As for my brother, well...
- AVG pops up a message saying he has a virus, but because AVG is the program popping up the message, then AVG must be the program that's infected, because popping up messages is what adware does. Uninstalled, now unprotected.
- Neither I nor my mum will know anything has happened until he starts shouting that "our Internet" has "switched itself off". Yet he still insists, after about 5 different ones, that the problem is the router.
- I'm apparently hogging or "leeching all our Internet" when he can't get online.
- WoW often slows down if I download something while it's running. That's apparently because I "hoard all the bandwidth". I don't actually know how this can be done to be honest, but i can't help arguing the exact opposite: surely if WoW has to slow down in order to accommodate my network use, then WoW must be using all the bandwidth, right? Otherwise we should both just be able to use the Internet at the same time without even noticing anything.
- "It's broken", to me, means "it's physically damaged". To him, it just doesn't work.
- I let him play L4D2 once on my Steam account. It ran really smoothly and he noticed a huge improvement. Then he went back to WoW and noticed loads of lag. That was apparently me leeching again...
- He fixed a microphone by cutting the cable and then selotaping it back together. Naturally, he now hs a new mic.
- His computer was running one time, with nothing on it, so I switched it off the normal way - "Turn off computer" at the bottom of the XP Start Menu. He was at work anyway. When he got back, he goes to switch it on, and it doesn't. I still don't really understand what the problem was, but he opened the case and did a bit of rewiring *gulp* and now it apparently works.
- He has a Tagen PSU.
- His graphics card is a Radeon HD 2900 XT.
- He gave me an old hard drive from his first build not long ago. Said it wouldn't start, so I started it in Safe Mode and true, it didn't get so far as booting Windows. Later I put it in my PC, booted into Vista (which I had ta the time) and scanned it. Over 300 viruses found.
- The onboard sound card in his current build keeps buggering up. I still haven't figured out why, but i think it has something to do with the fact that when you try to plug something in to it, the ports move. Ditto for his PS/2 ports.
- There are three outputs on the back of his 5.1 speaker system (obviously front, rear, and centre/sub). He's only got one connected, with his unshielded sub right next to his hard drive. Audio seems to come out of all the speakers, but it's not very easy to tell, because they're all huddled together in a heap at the front, rather than positioned correctly. Not that it matters anyway, because he's only got it plugged in to deliver stereo sound...
- He bought a 32" LCD TV to boast that he has a bigger monitor than me. It only goes up to 1024 x 768, and he sits about 3 feet away.

I can probably think of more, but I'm getting bored now...

I'm the only one to maintain the 4 computers in our house, my wife and younger teenager son are not interested in what is inside the box as long as it all works. :p

My other teenager son is following in my footsteps and IMO he opens/dismantles boxes too much (but that's how one learns).:D

I think my family is the opposite of poor col's.

My half sister knew how to turn on the pc that my dad built from her with bits he scraped together in Mongolia where they live. She could access the start menu, and load up paint at the age of 5. She is now 7 uses skype, yahoo messenger, and plays a good game of plants vs zombies.

My bro is competent, he used to dismantle and reassemble our old pc for fun.

Mum taught herself a lot of stuff about computers, she went from knowing nothing to being able to teach me a thing or two about msoffice applications.

Grandparents both have mobile phones and know how to send texts. My Grandad used to work in telecommunications, and worked on experimental fibre optics. Back then they were using them in battleships.
Up until a couple of years ago he was using an ancient pc which took those massive floppy disks. I believe he was hacking away with cobol.
We built him an XP machine which he broke once by deleting a crucial os file and then he fixed it when I sent him a replacement.

And then there's me :p

my mum on the other hand has trouble using the TV...

Mrs. Grapes is pretty good, better than most peeps, but i still have to sort her stuff out if it's much beyond installing apps.

I often get called into their room to sort stuff, the old "this has just stopped working" line.

God only knows, they probably moved something or maybe during a cleaning session. Their PC doesn't really live in its own space, more over the PC is a great place for things to live on top of in their case.

well in comparison to most here id say my family is pretty good

one of my brothers is an ict technician (a decent one btw not your common know it all, know nothing type) who knows his way around building pcs and is pretty damm good when it comes to the software side of things as well

my other two brothers and my younger sister are your typical can do most things and to be fair are pretty competent.

dad has only been using a computer for about a year or 2 now but seems to know what he needs to while my mum is clueless is improving but her useage of a computer has only recently moved into double figures :)

then of course theirs me who i would put on par with my older brother in that he knows a bit more in terms of software while i would know a bit more in terms of hardware :)

My Step-dad regularly buggers up the PC by over enthusiastic use of "cleaning programs" and AV programs that have been pushed at him by dodgy websites.

My mother (bless her), has a habit of hitting the "Print to File" button, then clicking Print 4-500 times before phoning me to say the printer is fcuked.

After 5 years of having a PC, my sister STILL didnt know what it looked like or how to turn it on.

It always used to be left on standby, and she had figured out that, if she wiggled the mouse, it would spring into life.

This was fine until mum went on holiday and turned the PC off.

6pm one evening I am just leaving work and my sis calls out "I am just going to print off some documents, then I'll be off".

4 hours later I get a phone call that goes like this....

Sis, "I have been wiggling this mouse, but the (expletive deleted) thing wont work!!"

Me, "Is it turned on??"

Sis, "The little light is orange, I pushed the button and it went off; I pushed it again and it went green, then orange again!!"

Me, "That is the monitor, you need to check to see if the computer is on"

Sis, "What do you mean, 'Monitor' ?"

Me, "You need to push the power button on the computer under the desk".

Sis, "WHAT??"

Me, "The big beige box under the desk"

Sis "Oh......" (looks under desk) "Oh yeah!!"

long pause

"I pushed the top button but nothing happened"

Me, "Try the large button about half way down"

Sis, "Hey !! it works!!" :clap:clap

4 hours wiggling the mouse!!

My sister and her husband both have ipod touchs, which they think are the best thing to happen to the human race.. They have a relatively good PC too, but dont really know how to use it.

My Dad was the biggest technophobe ever, but now has got properly good at using the mobile.. He's just starting to get into using things online etc..

My Mum is very good.. With the occasional help, she can pretty much do everything a good user can do.. I'm just getting her into using a couple of CMS systems on some websites she needs to update!

All very able.

Dad has been building them for years, built my first one over ten years ago now!
Mum is competent, did an IT course a few years back, can browse + use Word.
Brother is far above average, but not quite a technician, can do everything software wise. Though I don't think he has a computer of his own at the moment (at Uni.)
Sister is similar to my Mum, can use a machine, but if it goes wrong, then she needs a hand.
