View Full Version : invest in a meatier gfx card?
currently running a hd4670 1gb which stutters on some games when running on my 1280 x 1080 setup, since im planning on going for a full HD monitor soon i was thinking of upgrading to this > http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Components/Graphics+Cards/ATI+5700+Series/Gigabyte+ATI+Radeon+HD+5770+1024MB+GDDR5+PCI-Express+Graphics+Card+?productId=38318
currently using a 430w antec earthwatts psu, will this be compatible and work or will i need an extra power cable? and what are your thoughts on upgrading? my board is a Gigabyte P43-ES3G

from ATI website :)
450 Watt or greater power supply with one 75W 6-pin PCI Express® power connectors recommended (600 Watt and two 6-pin connectors for ATI CrossFireX™ technology in dual mode)

i've got the pci-e connector but do you think my psu would run it ok? or do i have to go for a bigger one? :(
Although @cal is right, normally you should be alright with a good 430W psu, but....as far I`m am aware of, the 430W Antec earthwatts is an older model with more amps on the +5v line, instead of +12v line as per new atx standards.
So, I say, better get a new PSU as well.

nah i would get a new psu mate its an old model like stawte said, i would recommend the 5670 if your keeping the psu you have right now
The antec will be FINE. You could run a GTX 260 on it.

hope that helps some.
as it states 360W of 12V
thanks guys :)
what would you recommend to upgrade to?

The antec will be fine. I know someone who runs a 5770 on the 380w model without any issue.

The Antec you currently have should just about be okay as long as it has the proper connectors for it. The ATI website may state 450W + to run the card but it's always heavily OTT and based on lower quality cheapy PSU's anyway.
According to the energy calculator on Enermax's website my current machine needs 1350W... Which is odd considering I am using a 750W model

When it comes to powering gfx cards, Amps are far more important than Watts anyway...
The 5770 has a TCP of 108W which is about 9Amps & your PSU has 2x 12v rails with 17amps each giving you a total of 34amps (most likely 32amps combined) so you have plenty...
It will work, trust me :ninja:

yes if you would like to read the label and my post the psu clearly states combined maximum of 360W of 12V meaning 30 amps.
but yes there should be enough to run it.
Yeah as previously mentioned it should work fine, if you do get instability in games then it would pay to get it replaced. No point of doing that first.
