this is what I want to do

downstairs has a wireless N router using dd-wrt firmware with a cat5 cable coming upstairs into my PC room switch box

upstairs the wifi signal is bad BUT I have a spare Linksys router on tomato firmware that only supports G

I was wondering is it possible to connect this Linksys router to my switch
so it could give better signal for upstairs

Yes. Essentially you're setting it up as an Access Point. Easy enough to do, connect into it, set up the wireless etc. then once all the settings are done, turn off the routing ability and you should be good to go. :)

You may have to faf about with the sub-net mask or something or other :P

I know I badgered the hell out of one of our Clan IT monkeys when I set mine up :D

Subnet should be fine as it should just act essentially as a switch with an AP on it. Anything connects onto it, it passes through to the main router which then replies with an IP for the new device.

Just plug it in and set it up!

Just what I thought mate - but it took HOURS to set up - although me being "slightly merry" and communicating through IRC prolly didnt help :P

Haha, yeah. Took me a while to set up mine as I changed the routing ability first...rebooted it...it then didn't have an IP. :p

That is what I discovered when messing around with a bunch of routers, switches and wifi repeaters.

They all default to the usual IP address, 192.168.0.1. You need to change the secondary bits and pieces so that they don't all try to pick this address.

I found that it helps to connect the extra bits directly to a PC that is not on the network, such as a laptop, so that you can interrogate them individually and check their settings.
