View Full Version : I7 860 @3.6 1.28v idles at 38 is this good
I have a freezer 7 cooler.
what level of intel burn shall i test it on?
What if it passes standard but fails on the higher settings, does that mean its unstable?
it has passed standard with cpu showing on hw monitor max 71
how can i force the ram to stay at 1600mhz? its on 1605 mhz
is standard good enough?

I'd say its fine considering the cooler your using - max temp should be your concern really when O/C. If you OC fails at any type of burn in test then its arguably un-stable but considering synthetic stability make your processor do stuff you won't do with real world usage, a few hours of stability testing or Prime96 or others would be fine i imagine.
prime 96? or prime 95?
also how do use it properly for an i7 860?
thanks
Probably a typo and meant Prime95.
Load up Prime95, choose 'large FFT' for max heat production and let it run for 2hrs+. If that passes then your cooling is adequate.
If it passes that heat test, try two hours of 'small FFT'.
If all that passes, you have a pretty stable system.
Some people go crazy and do 8hrs of each, followed by LinX or InteBurnTest before they call it stable...but each to their own.
When overclocking the common way is to adjust the BCLK...which is a reference clock used by many parts of the board. Increasing the BCLK will also increase other components of the board including the memory and Northbridge/MCH.
Once you start increasing the BCLK everything else will nudge up accordingly. You can't fix memory at a rated speed when increasing BCLK, you can adjust the multipliers though.
1605 is pretty much 1600...it's fine running at that.
the best voltage i can get is 1.24 if it goes below this it fails intelburn
i think my cooler is pants
Your cooler was good a few years back, i have one, great on a e2180 (load is ~20c :D) but i wouldn't think it would be up to an i7
agreed^ still 3.6 aint so bad is it? my gpu is alos not best but i dont game much. so i sold my gtx 275
It's not agressive and i'm quite impressed by it's idle tempreture.
What is it under load?
Thats not bad at all mate for an oldish cooler.

ive seen it go to 72 on one of the cores. the other cores were on 70,69,68

when did the freezer 7 come out. i have the rev 2 but i dont think it makes a big difference
Those temps are doable IMO, but others will say it's too hot.
The AF7 was out when i did my first build 3 years ago because i used it. :) so it's at least 3 years and it was a good price to at about £30.

Rev 2 just supports more CPU sockets - the only difference to my knowledge.

its £16 now, still decent for the price. which coolers would you recomend for under £30 for future overclocks
In all honesty, I'm not too clued up on coolers at the moment, I've been more worried about passing my exams but the word on the street is that the Noctua coolers are meant to be good but i haven't had first hand experience with them
Titan is one of the best as well as a Zalman (each around 35)
Its being short on the bottom and a 92mm fan that limits the Freezer 7.
As an added thought, you could replace the OEM fan on that and get one of the newer more efficient fans.

do better fans make that much of a difference?

If you get a good fan, yes. The price of a decent third party fan will put your overall cost up and you would of been better served I imagine by getting a better cooler instead.
i also have a zalman cnps10x quite sitting here. but i only used the freezer 7 beucase i had lost the 1156 bracket
Im going to use this on an am3 build. which ill put down my first order with aria.
I can post you the 1156 bracket if you want?

That is true, to a point, you can have an excellent cooler (and more $$ won't make it better, take the Titan for example), putting a better fan on it does raise the price, but with the extra $$ you can't buy a better cooler...
But I do see your point. :thumb:

Try it out, from what I read, it's an excellent cooler.

thanks very much for the offer but i hate changing coolers:p
ill just use the amd clip on a am3 build probably the 6 core

You should be able to, really, any cooler is "better" than the stock one generally.
