I beleave stuff like Sony Vegas give you about 30 day free trial , other than that Im not sure of any freeware proggys other than Windows Movie Maker !!???

A good link, I've used Virtualdub before to convert some of my TV recordings to avi but it's very complicated to use. It's not one tool but a bundle of tools that do work together but don't work as one.

I've also used another tool called Mediacoder which is somewhat easier to use.

But I don't think this is what muzzo was looking for. I used Virtualdub for video conversions but does it create a new movie by editing scenes, dubbing sound etc?

The clue is in the name. ;)
As you say, it is not easy to use, but given a little effort, it is quite powerful.

I have used it to edit videos in the past.
The thing I use it most for is to convert Portrait movies from my camera to landscape without having them distorted. I also play with the gamma, colour and brightness settings and convert to DIVX from AVI
