Hello there,
as my title says, I have a p5ne-sli mobo with an intel quad core @ 2.4.
recently I decided to re-install CS:S, only to find even with my rig of
5750 1gb gpu
intel quad 2.4
4gb ddr2
I got horrendous fps and it was extremely choppy and virtually unplayable, fps ranging from 15-80, very sporadic!
Anyway, I did my research and found out the reason for this was that css was very cpu intensive, and it does not allow the use of multi core processors, so only uses 1 processor.
I then looked in my BIOS at my processor, and without overclocking, each clock was running at 1.59GHz, which explained why CSS was running so bad!
I then set about learning how to OC and found a detailed explaination of what i should do for my specific mobo.
HOWEVER!
when I o/c even the slightest bit, my PC decides it can't handle it and randomly shuts off, sometimes during startup, sometimes before i can even get onto bios, sometimes it makes it onto desktop! it seems as a rule that the more i try to o/c, the faster it shuts off, so i quickly have to race into bios and reset.
I've tried to incease the multiplier, which would be the best option considering it wouldn't effect any other components, but in order to do this I need to disable 'thermal control cpu' or something, and every time I do this, i get the shut down problem at startup...but with the thermal control on, it allows me to change the multiplier from 6 to 9, but then when i save and look again, it just resets it back to 6....
so to sum up,
when I try o/c the FBS or whatever its called, I get the shut down problem,
and in order to increase the multiplier, I need to disable the thermal control, which again, causes the shut down problem
-.-
Im no expert by any stretch of the imagination, but it feels like im a sort of catch 22 situation, and I have no idea what to do.
Does anyone know WHY this problem is occuring, or perhaps HOW to get around it? is it a fail-safe when it thinks ive set it up too high? or is there a fault? badly cooled? not enough power? voltages incorrect?
Any help at all would be fantastic, as i quite enjoyed playing css again haha, but at 20fps, its not what i'd call enjoyable :(
Thanks a lot for even reading this far, those of you that may have, and thanks even more if you are able to shed any light on my silly situation!
