View Full Version : Overheating
Finally after 3 months all my pc parts have arrived.
Built the machine in an hour, then took 2 more hours to get the Ninja cooler on(nightmare)
power on the machine all seems to work, checked the temps in the bios, and it they seem to increase 1 degree every 30 seconds.
After about 5 minutes the cpu is about 60 degrees and the motherboard is 50.
This is with 5 optional fans and a scythe ninja in a lian li case. No cheap stuff. No overclock.
I have re applied the paste twice and reseated the ninja... am i too take it all i was told about the ninja is ********, it doesnt appear to work at all.
doesn't sound right at all, i know you probably have a spec on here some where but whats the full spec of the the pc? specifically mobo and cpu?
Couple of silly questions so noi but how much thermal paste did you apply to the cpu? typically no more than the eqivalent to approx 2 or 3 grains of rice is needed and personally i let the heatsink spread it out others say spread it out with a razor blade.
Also you say you had trouble with the heatsink, are you 100% sure it was fitted correctly? not up on 1 side slightly?
Did you reset the cmos / bios before powering up? its not beyond the realms of possibility that due to the way the mobo left the factory the bios was applying a little too much voltage to the cpu so its always a good idea to reset it to defaults.
Im sure this last time that the cooler is as far on as it can possibly go, but i have to admit i thought it would be tighter. theres no wobble, but i recon with a thrust u could knock it off, the plastic supports that go into the motherboard are made of such cheap plastic they dont hold very well (poor for a £36 cooler)
the first time i didnt use much paste at all, so i used a little more the second time.
Im thinking of sticking the stock cooler on in a minute to see what results i get, i just dont want to keep taking the ninja off as it takes forever to get it back on.
I will try resetting the cmos now.
Spec is
Core 2 duo E6600
Asus P5n32-E
Leadtek 8800GTX
2gb corsair 1033 ram
xfi
seasonic s12
Scythe ninja.
Cheers
The paste is supposed to be a thin layer, just enough to 'gel' the two surfaces and fill in any air pockets or divots in the metalwork. A thick blanket of the stuff will have a more insulating effect.
Yeah theres not too much paste on there, its not even as thick as a peice of paper. Evenly spread.
I have given up with the Ninja the stock is going on!
I've pretty much the same setup, and i'm getting around 32c off each core, running the OS even over a few hours. I found hte Ninja to be tricky as hell to install - especially turning the little plastic connectors to lock it into place. The instructions weren't that clear either.
Yeah do you think i would benefit from taking the whole thing apart and putting the cpu and cooler on first with the board out?
or is that just going to waste my time?
seen a lot of info this morning saying the fixings are terrible and need better ones purchased.
Thats how I tend to do it when I'm building a new box. Get as much in place as possible when the board is outside of the case.

Same here, always the best way to do it. 8)
I didn't think it was possible to attach the Ninja to the board inside the case. I attached it outside too. I didn't buy alternative fixings for the case. Did you turn the plastic fixings until they locked fully into place? One or two of mine turned, but didn't lock - I had to apply a little more pressure to get them to twist and lock fully. Once they are locked it is pretty solid.
I'm not familiar with the Ninja, does it use the same clip mechanism as the stock Intel 775 HSF's?
If so, it's best to install with the mobo already mounted. You need to make sure the arrows on the legs of the heatsink are turned as far anticlockwise as possble then locked into place. When mounting, sit it level on the CPU, then push down until the clips click into place on all 4 sides.
Sorry if you already knew all this, just covering some more angles :)
i had to wait 3 months for my processor to arrive so i built the machine and just left that till last.
But I did a complete rebuild from scratch, placed the cooler on, only took 5 minutes out of the case, but it was still flimsy, So i tried the stock cooler, which showed me how rigid that sticks on.
So now I am using that and the peice of shite ninja is in the bin, the stock cooler keeps it at 39 o/ced to 2.7ghz and 49 under heavy load.
Good enough for me.

Maybe!!!
Now I having the stress that is known as vista...eugh!
its like having a 2 year old, asking hundreds of questions
are you sure u want to open this zip file... yes
are you sure you want to extract this zip file... yes
but the contents might not be save, continue?... yes
are you sure u want to trust this .exe? yes
Windows is about to load a program, ok to continue... O F'ING K!!!
Right now thats all out my system i can relax in the beauty of my 8800GTX that i have yet to test as i cant get a game working...
Turn off the awful Parental controls, and most of that will disapear. :D
Yeah, you have to switch off the UAC settings.
You'll also find that NVidia haven't released a decent driver yet. The latest was the one released on 20 Feb. I've read somewhere that they are hoping to have something for the end of April, but that might just be wishful thinking.
Oh, and if you want to network your Vista machine to other Vista machines, you'll need to assign a logon password (even in Admin settings) in order to be able to access and share drives. Took me an age to realise that.
Oh, and good luck with your webcam (if you have one). Not many are supported by Vista...
[quote:bb044d50aa=\"liquidninjas.com\"]To get rid of that annoying pop up
Go to control panel
then to user accounts
click Turn User Account Control on or Off
check or uncheck the box then press ok
NO MORE STUPID POP UPS!!!
then go into the Security Center. to the left, you'll see on the menu a thing that says \"Change the way Security Center notifies me\" or something similar. Click on it.
3. A little window opens up with three options... the important option, and the one to select, is the one labeled as \"not recommended\", which is something like \"Do not notify me of any events (Not Recommended)\".
4. Disabling this will disable every single security center pop-up, including the UAC one. the thing is, that you won't get ANY popups from the security center anymore... which im sure you'll be able to live without![/quote:bb044d50aa]
Job Done :D

You mean UAC.
Start > Run > msconfig.exe, \"Tools\" tab > Disable UAC, \"Launch\", Reboot.
