Whats the best G-card we have on the site for about the £100 price.
was looking at the
Arianet GeForce GTS 250 1024MB GDDR3 PCI-Express Graphics Card - Quickcode: 37305

I wouldn't pay that for a GTS 250. It would be worth paying the extra for a 5770 or getting the GTS 250 form elsewhere - they can be had new for circa £85.

I've got a GTS 260 in the machine that hardly ever get's turned on now :) For £100 ish I was very impressed with the performance and 2d clarity.

If you cant stretch that little bit more for an ATI 5770 (starts at £120 on Aria), you should find an ATI 5750 (starts at £94 on Aria) works well for you, but I would seriously think about spending the extra.

I would also go for the ATI rather than Nvidia for a few reasons. Firstly a 5750 is a little bit faster than a GTS250, while a 5770 is almost as fast as a GTX260. Secondly the ATI cards run much cooler and draw less power than the Nvidia equivalents so cost of ownership via power consumption is also lower. Thirdly the ATI cards support DX11 while the Nvidia are older DX10 cards.

Because playing DX11 games on a 5770 is worth the hassle.

Another vote for 5770. Actually get two.

And because two gives you twice the power in crossfire.

Or just get yourself a 5850 for the price.

thanx all,

@Tolmandary thanx for taking the time to look for me I will have a wee look at the cards you talked about.

@Monkey u think the ATI build quality is less than the Nvidia cards?

Hi Kulla,

ATi build quality is not worse than nVidia's.

As someone who has had cards from both for years I do not have an axe to grind (i.e., I'm not a Fanboi!)

I've just replaced my excellent nV 8800GTS with an ATi 5870 (not that it was plain sailing!)

nV have had quite a few issues with build quality - Google 'Bumpgate' - http://www.semiaccurate.com/2009/08/21/nvidia-finally-understands-bumpgate/

I have a laptop that is dead because of this.

IMHO ATi currently offer the best value.

Hopefully nV will get their next generation of cards sorted so we can all benefit from competition in the marketplace.

I'd currently suggest you go for a 5770.

Let us know what you decide to do!

As NoOnions said, I have never noticed a difference between ATI and Nvidia build quality either. Today, we are building products that are very well designed, not like in the old days of hand sodering chips.

There is a slight difference between subsystem vendors (e.g MSI, Gigabyte, HSI etc). In general I have found the budget card manufacturers have a higher failure rate, but even then it's still a low rate. Premium cards like the Gigabyte UDV which include 2 oz copper PCB boards, Samsung/Hynix memory, Japanese solid capacitors, Ferrite Core Chokes, and Low RDS (on) MOSFET are incredibly reliable and run at lower temperatures to competing cards, but do cost more.

Runs Crysis like a charm. ;)

The 5770 is a perfect performance/price ratio card right now, thus, it's a no brainer.
