I'm considering to purchase the following card:

XFX GeForce 8600 GT 256MB GDDR3 PCI-Express Graphics Card

Does it need either of the following:
1 x 6-pin PCI-E power connector
1 x 6+2-pin PCI-E power connector

By the way, what's the maximum resolution given by the VGA and DVI output of the card?

Thanks.

Thanks. May I know the reason you suggested both graphic card above?

Thanks. However, I could not find the resolution of the card.

By the way, does graphic consume so much power?

EVGA 8600 GT
Idle: 166 Watts
Load: 240 Watts

XFX 8600 GT
Minimum Power Requirement: 300 Watts

Does it mean the graphic card alone will consume 300 watts???

Any graphic card that consume less than 100 watts? I might not be afford to have such a high power graphic card because my computer will be on 24/7. I may switch off the monitor but I think the graphic card is still working even I have switched off the monitor.

no it will consume no where near that it's the recommended wattage for the entire machine with that card in.

ps. im selling an asus silent 512ddr3 1 year old for 35 inc p&P :)

I think that Idle/Load figures will be for the entire system, not just the GPU. The 8600 GT is not a particularly powerful card so it does not take up a large amount of power.

That said, the idle figures on the newer cards are much better due to improved efficiency so a newer card may be better from a power perpective, though the higher price may negate the power savings

The min PSU requirement is deffo for the entire system, so if you have say a 400W PSU, you should be fine. It will only need a 6-pin PCI-E power connection.

I'm a bit confused now. Some say it does not require external power supply (i.e. PCI-E power connector). What do you reckon? Thanks.

Well, I wanted to put you into something a little more recent and had more memory. (either x2 or x4 more).

I took about 30 minutes and looked into ALL the graphic cards Aria carries under £64. If you are going to go over £65 then you might as well get a new up to date GFX.

Video Card Type/ G3D Rating /Rank /Aria Cost

GeForce 8600 GT/ 392 /209 £30.54
GeForce 9500 GT/ 360 /226 £43.42
GeForce GT 220 /459 /181 £44.05
Radeon HD 4650 /458 /183 £35.24
GeForce GT 240 /756/ 90 £61.09
Radeon HD 4670/ 776 /85 £63.44

Over £65... I'd get the DX11...

Radeon HD 5670 1148 36 £70.49

vs

Radeon HD 5750 1397 23 £93.99

Whew, that was a lot of work for you, but fun too. Please consider Rep+ 1 for that. :D

as i have learned to my cost more memory isnt necessarly a good thing if it is worse memory

i went from the 8600gt 256 ddr3 to the 4650 512ddr2 and got no improvement, in fact a loss in some bench marks

I clicked the "scale" already but why your rep# does not increase? Weird...

Your rep power is 1 so wont have much effect on the person you give rep too.
if i give you rep your rep power should increase thus allowing you more rep to give or something along those lines lol

Edit.... your rep power is now 6 ;)

Interesting... does it mean the "total rep power" in this forum is "conserved" (e.g. not more than a limit)? To give other rep power, we need to have rep power. Our rep power is given by other... Other is given by others... so, where did the "first" forumer got the rep power? :)

I tried giving rep power to RDRUNR, but got the following message:

"You must spread some Reputation around before giving to RDRUNR again."

Interesting... it looks to me that I can't give RDRUNR a +1 rep power...

Depends on what card you buy, some 8600 GTs require power, some don't. If you have the quickcode or link to the card, I'll check for you
