Just wondering if anyone else is watching The Pacific. I'm enjoying it, but as a follow up to Band of Brothers it doesn't seem to have quite the same quality. The Aussie leave episode didn't add anything to the show, the battles seem to be completely one sided (i.e. Yanks) and the characters mainly seem to be throwaway apart from Sledge, Leckie and Basilone. I am still really enjoying it, but just not as good as I hoped :(

I watched the first 3 and really liked it so have decided to save myself until it comes out on Blu-Ray.

Just so you know the story only mainly follows the 3 friends and thats why there are a lot of throwaway people on there. They tried to have it slightly different from the way Band of Brother is, so that's why its different in that way.

I love stuff like this. I have Band of Brothers on Blu-Ray and yesterday got Saving Private Ryan on Blu-Ray too :smile.

I'm up to date with it (Same way as Wonderlust no doubt ;)) Can't say I've really enjoyed it as much as I thought I would...s'not as good as Band of Brothers that's for sure.
Think my favourite bit is the history lesson and eye witness accounts at the beginning of each ep....always reminds me of "Battle" comics from the early 80's with tag-lines like "Bunker Hill - It was a mound in the middle of jungle, was it worth dying for?"
I think perhaps I expected too much from the series.

I've been catching up on the episodes broadcasted so far- they're pretty good, but I think the hype might have made expectations far too great, especially since people compare it to Brand of Brothers most of the time.

I do fine the book more interesting, although it paints an even grimmer picture than in some of the episodes.

It's a good watch but still uncompareable to BoB which was a true piece of artwork.

Indeed. But I don't think they could have ever managed to get it the same. Two completely different areas of war and very hard to portray the battles etc.

Still, loved the series very much.

Love that bit myself. The production quality in general is really good, just the story and feeling of purpose of the show that is a little lacking at times.

Just so you know the story only mainly follows the 3 friends and thats why there are a lot of throwaway people on there.

But that is the problem to me, there is no real link in the stories of the three men (Basilone, Leckie and Sledge). They pass like ships in the night whilst the series jumps from one's tale to another's. This would be fine if it was a longer series so you could get to grips with some of the people they are with, but you end up struggling to keep up with most of the ancillary cast. Maybe that is intentional as their take on war, but it ruins the interest in most of the people who die.

Also, has anyone else noticed how stupid and crap at fighting the Japanese soldiers are portrayed? I know they had kamikaze troops, but this is making out like every fight they get involved in mainly results in them running straight at heavy machine gun fire

i finished it off last night and tbh i really, really enjoyed it. yes its no bob but its still good in its own right for me.

it got better as it went on, but i think it was too short as the battles would just be raging and then it would fade out and back in the next morning and it was all done and thats kinda how the hole series left me feeling. maybe that was what they wanted so as to keep us wanting more, maybe it cost them more than they wanted idk but i do feel another 6 eps wouldnt of gone a miss.

5 more and swap out the Aussie episode waste for some more battles ;)

Band of Brothers is my favorite bit of television/film of all time.

I could watch it all the way through, and still go back and start watching it again.

Its a little more real to me as well, as the airbase they flew out from (RAF Upottery) is about a 10min drive from me, and the whole of the paratrooper division spent a lot of time in the town I live in.. I also had the pleasure of meeting Wild Bill "Gonorrhoea" Guarnere a few years ago when he came back to the airfield for a WWII memorial day, along with one of the planes they jumped from (or so I was told)

I havent watched any of the Pacific yet, but I'm waiting until I can get hold of every single episode, and watch it more as a film than a series. I'm not expecting it to be as good as Band Of Brothers, but still want to watch it! :)

Almost 10hrs in one go , at least the carp Aussie episode won't be as disappointing with another straight after.

Two bouts of five would be a treat, just make sure you don't plan to stop after episode 3 or you might not start again

Finished last night myself :thumb:

Watching the end and seeing that it was based on the memoirs of the two who survived made the parallel but not particularly linked tales more agreeable.

was an ok series, but not upto the standard of Band of Brothers in my eyes

Agreed, but then again there hasn't really been any other series comparable in quality and similar to Band Of Brothers. Maybe like COD4 MW, the genre could do with a kick up the *** and a well scripted / funded version set in Iraq or similar.

i thought "over there" was decent, if you ignore the first 2 eps which were fairly cheesy. "generation kill" is plain horrible...

Its not up to "Tour Of Duty" standards then??

I am in two minds about downloading it.
