its horses for courses, the 84 is a media card, it has a less powerful gpu core with more ram as its all you need for playback. the 86 is more of a gaming card with a more powerful gpu core and less but faster ram which helps more for gaming.

you should pick the one that suits your needs, with outputs noise and such.

for me i would take the 86 as it can do everything the 84 can plus it will do the odd bit of gaming if needed too.

agreed with marsey, the 8600gt can do everything + more, 512mb on an 8400gs is useless anyway

The 8600 GT is a much faster card, in games probably 3x the performance. :)

8600GT can game a bit. 8400GS will be better for a Media Centre due to lower power requirements but no chance of gaming.

Not for gaming??

Either, both will display 32 bit colours at the highest monitor resolutions. :D

I got 8400GS in my media PC, I tried L4D1 and it really sucked, lol!

but, as media card, for 1080p movies/BD's etc it is perfect!
also it has low Power consumption, so if it is only for MEDIA, go for 8400gs
