View Full Version : Laptop Bios Password
Well basically i got hammered last night, and the landlord of the pub asked me if i could fix his laptop.
I said yeah sure, as it sounded like he had just forgot his Windows password.
Had a look this morning and it seems he has forgot his bios password. :o
The laptop is a Toshiba, and Windows 98 and a piece of Sh!t tbh.
Anyway i have found a few things to try for later:
But this one sounds like very good, http://home.earthlink.net/~porsche914/linux/keydisk.html
But the problem i have is i dont understand how to do it even though there is a guide.
So could someone please dumb it down for me? :D
Eeek, messing around with hex editors is an annoying business, I think I tried it once.
It basically wants you to change the information held on the boot sector of the floppy disk.
I think it wants me to:
Download keydisk and run it (This brings up the Command Prompt with disapears straight away)
Then run the Hex Editor thing. But this loads up a box and i get confused
I always get confused with Hex editors too :?
I have done this: loaded up the Keydisk in the hex editor and edited the 2nd line like the guide says.
Now im confused.
Do i just whack the .exe file on a floppy?
When i run the .exe i get an illegal error now.
Help :(
I'd try putting the exe on the floppy disk and just booting from the disk and see what happens...
If that doesnt work, maybe make a bootable disk, and bung the file on there as well and try running it from within dos?
I cant boot from the floppy though mate, as i cant get passed the bios password.
oh ok - so the floppy drive isnt the first device that its set to boot from and you need to get to the bios to change that? or it just wont do anything without the bios password?
What happens if you just have the file on the disk with it in the drive, and start the computer up?
I'll have a dig and see if I can find anything else..
Basically the first screen which appears asks you for the bios password.
No way of getting passed it.
I've found 2 things a parallel port thing which you can get off ebay for £8 or this way but i dont see how this works.
The laptop is at home so i cant try anything yet, but hoping to get it done when i get home so im open to all ideas :)
id just found the parallel port thing too.. you could do the same thing with some bits of wire or a few paper clips, instead of buying one!
well, its just a case of shorting out certain pins - thats all the loopback plug does.. lemme see if I can find a pinout for it..
ok, so basically, all you need to do is to connect pins:
1+5+10
2+11
3+17
4+12
6+16
7+13
8+14
9+15
http://www.dpie.com/pcmcia/spp100_pinout.gif
And theres your Parallel port pinout diagram..
The tricky one will be connecting pins 1+5+10, but it shouldnt be too hard.
You can tell if its working as the laptop wont ask for passwords any more, but it still might not do anything. If thats the case, hold escape (I think), and it will take you into the bios where you can clear the password..
triple post points score for me, I think! :D
if you happen to have an old parallel cable laying around, you could do it this way..

Thanks Aaron!!
Just one question: What do i use to connect the pins? 8)
Ok, a little while ago we ordered a product called Micro-Scope and i remmeber seeing something in it that looked like the parallel port on the picture.
So i decided to have a look, and i have found a parallel port, so its just a case of plugging it in? :?
ah cool - well, if you have a look in the third post in that run of mine, there is a link which will give you fairly straightforward steps to be able to make your own one out of the parallel port connector..
as you've got one, its just a case of opening it up, and joining the correct wires together..
:)
Plastic is molded round the one of got no way of getting into it.
So if i decide to do the other way of shorting. What should i use to connect the pins?
Id probably try and bodge something before I bought anything.. hehe
straightened paperclips and a bit of any old wire maybe? Id probably attach an inch of wire to the end of each paper clip to give you a bit of flexibility. Then stick the paper clips into each hole, and join the relevant bits of wire, and hey presto, everything gets shorted! ;) hehe
Hmmm not sure where i can get some old wire from. Will have a look around :)
Cheers for all your help Aaron, will give it a try tonight and report back.
1st i just wanna check if the parallel method works with it 1st
No worries..
Speaker wire to the rescue again?! ;)

Tried any Backdoor passwords mate?
Toshiba BIOS
Most Toshiba laptops and some desktop systems will bypass the BIOS password if the left shift key is held down during boot
not sure if this is true or not?
At boot-up note the BIOS provider (Award, AMI, Phoenix, IBM, etc.)
For Award BIOS’ try these backdoor passwords:
AWARD_SW
j262
HLT
SER
SKY_FOX
BIOSTAR
ALFAROME
Lkwpeter
j256
AWARD?SW
LKWPETER
syxz
ALLy
589589
589721
awkward
CONCAT
d8on
CONDO
j64
szyx
For AMI BIOS’ try these backdoor passwords:
AMI
BIOS
PASSWORD
HEWITT RAND
AMI?SW
AMI_SW
LKWPETER
A.M.I.
CONDO
For PHOENIX BIOS’ try this backdoor password:
phoenix
