View Full Version : Going away on your own
Anyone been on holiday on there own?
Im going to take next Friday off so have 4 days in a row and want to go somewhere. Not sure where i want to go.
I dont really have anyone to go with though, Lost contact with alot of my mates when i left school as i went straight into work and most of them went to uni.
I was thinking of going to see a Friend in London but hotels are pretty expensive round there.
Anyone have any ideas for me?
Not sure if i want to drive far, Depends really.
Mat:o
I drove to newquay on my own, but that wasnt planned, and once I got there I was like, sod it, Ill go home and try and talk about it. That said, It was nice watching the sun come up on the beach....
Depends what you wanna do when you get there tbh.
A few years ago after I split from my wife, i was going through a bad time because of it, Spoke with my parents and they paid for me to go away. Being the shy reserved type of guy I am. I booked a week away all in to Turkey for a week on my own. Best Holiday I've EVER had. Booked on the Wednesday flew on the Friday. made loads of friends when i got there, spent the day lounging by the pool chatting to the other guests and the evening's i spent clubbing with loads of girls i met.
Would love to do it again, no stress, no-one trying to plan your days doing stuff you dont wanna do. Absolute bliss....
Went to London to visit a friend i met on holiday too, got a coach there and back saved a fortune rather than driving or getting the train from manchester. that was pretty good too.
It all comes down to how confident you are i think too, if you are shy then going somewhere on your own probably not the best as you'll just get bored, if your confident and outgoing and will just chat to anyone and everyone then it's a blast as you'll make loads of new friends too.
Hope that helps.

I don't see anything wrong with going away on your own :) Although only having 4 days limits yourself... How about planning a motor/car project for those 4 days?
A long weekend in Bangkok would seem to fill the bill... :)

What? with the Government telling people not to travel there due to the civil unrest?!?

Nah dont do getting arrested, actually dont really do getting drunk.
Just do women:eek:
I've thought about going away on my own a few times before but never actually done it. I was thinking of just starting local because I know there are plenty of places around here to go and see; I just never appreciate them because I live locally, kind of like how my uncle lives in London, used to drive buses to the Millennium Dome (now the O2) but has never actually been in it.
I'm perfectly happy to just approach people if I need help, like to get directions, but I'm not the sort to just go up to some random person and start talking. Also I'm very close to my friends and I'm not sure if I'd get bored doing things on my own. Maybe I should just do a test run, one day out on my own trying local attractions...
I seriously loved it. Would do it again tomorrow if the opportunity arose.
But i'm 1 of those people though that can make friends in a empty room. So that really does help.
Cheers for the help Tystar, Some nice pics there.
Ill just end up in the local area more than likely. Flights are a bit packed at the moment so i cant find much on the internet.
So somthing local for me to do...
finding stuff to do depends on what floats ya boat really. A meander along the beach with nice fish and chips, a walk around a country park/house for interest or an action packed time doing some event.
There's a fair amount of all of those in the ThamesValley/M4 corridor. Cotswolds water park is nice at this time of year.

When i was in the army and my days off didn't match up with my mates i used to jump in the car and go anywhere, Rome, Madrid, Barcelona, Florence, Berlin.
I once drove 18 hours to Prague, went on out on the pop, slept it off in the car and drove back, awesome 48 hours, got back at 0530 in the morning and started work at 0630.
You can do what you want to do, places like Newquay are great for making quick friends, anywhere in Wales too, except Newport.
Using the Eurostar you can get to Brussels or Paris from Bristol in about 6 hours, awesome for a nightout.
yer newquay is the shiz im going down their for a week in june granted it's with 7 of my mates but i do like wonder off as they do and do my own thing meet new people and get wasted with them.
Going somwhere on your own gives you more freedom to do what YOU want, so as tystar says throw in some confidence in their and your flying u probably have a better time on your own than with your mates.
london hotels like premier inn aint to bad (:

Didn't know BBC Click was still going :)
Depends on your budget really. Berlin is a good few days for touristing, Hamburg / Amsterdam / Prague for some ooh lahlah, Paris if you want to crap all over yourself as they havent discovered proper plumbing yet.
Closer to home, you have Cheddar and Brecon for the scenery aspect, a bit further for a trek up Snowdon, Cardiff's good for beer n fan ny, as is Brum and always easy to find cheap places to stay. If you did fancy London, i believe Stelios opened up an EasyHotel where it costs about 3 pence to stay, or thereabouts :D
Or, grab a sleeping bag and some supplies and drive straight up north to John O'Groats, then down the east coast and round to Lands end. North in a day up the motorways, 2 days down to Newquay for a bevvy, day 4 lands end and home :)
I'd get to Newquay, rent a wetsuit for 4 days (or even buy one there not expensive) buy a bodyboard/surfboard, and book a cheap hotel on the cliff tops at Fistral.
Get up early, coffee overlooking the ocean then get in there to hit the waves.
have a stroll around town in the afternoon, bit of food etc, and good nightlife in the eve - or relax with tv/ book and a beer etc nice to just get away sometimes.
Take camera too and go for a bit of photography day after, drive round the coast roads etc, eat loads of cornish pasties,
Day after that play a bit of golf on the Fistral cliff tops, take the ferry accross Crantock beach, could even hire a mountain bike and do the camel toe trail :clap
all in all winning 4 days :D
Agreed on Newquay, it's pretty nice there & the pasties are rather good too. not as nice as they are on looe though, those are just too good. Pity it's about a 600 mile drive for me.
I should make more use of newquay for short breaks really.. its only 100miles for me.. I went close to there last year and it was REALLY nice..
Mat - if you happen to decide to camp, let me know and I'll give you the details of a really nice campsite (cheap too :D) where I went last year :)
