View Full Version : Vista Networking
I cant get vista to network properly! Its on a wireless network at work, and when i try and browse the network I can see the computer, and the router, but thats all.
I can ping everything, and I can see the web setup pages of the router, the wireless range extender and the canon photocopier. But nothing will show up in the network view.
Its probably just some checkbox ive missed somewhere, but I dont know Vista well enough to know where that is!

Vista is a lot different from xp as far as control panel goes, but have a good look at all the security options in the network setup and also make sure that you are in the same workgroup as the other machines.
You need to go into the network controll centre and make it a private network, then you can access all the other places in your network. I have vista so can help with this stuff.

Please follow the steps below
1. Click Start -> Run
2. Type in the Run field \"secpol.msc.\"
3. That will bring you to Vista's security policy system. Once there, choose Local Policies > Security Options and then find \"Network Security: LAN Manager\" authentication level.
4. Change the Setting from \"Send NTLMv2 response only\" to \"Send LM & NTLM -- use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated\".
Then check the progress.
One problem I had with networking Vista was the need to set a password for each user. I'm the only user of my PC, so don't have this set-up, but needed to in order to network with my mate when he came around. Dunno if this is the same issue that's stopping you, but sounds the same as happened to me.
You'll need to make sure all your machines are in the same Workgroup. I use HOME for example.
Ha! I just realised it was me who started this thread!
Well, everything shows up instantly and flawlessly when connected via a wired connection!! But as soon as you switch to wireless, it can only ping other machines, and not actually see them. All the network drives also disconnect.
- All the machines have always been in the same worksgroup.
- I'm not sure its a password thing, as everything works through a wired connection, just not wireless. And the laptop cant even see the other machines, let alone try and connect to them.
- It is set as a private network.
Who knows... its not a major issue! Just annoying!

Sometimes firewall is blocking such data when you are on wireless so turn off the Firewall and then check the progress.
Is file sharing set on all pcs?
Everything works from every other PC/MAC in the building, whether they are wireless or not.
Every PC has file sharing set up, and working.
The firewall is completely switched off on the Vista box. There are no restrictions set on traffic within the internal network either.
It just seems blind when using wireless!
:s wireless and wired dont usually talk that well.
Ive never had a problem before?
I find they don't work as well with each other, I wouldn't say its seamless in any way. Maybe renaming all domains to a different new one?

I had the same problem on Vista trying to view XP network shared folders. There is a simple solution and I will let you know when I charge up the laptop again.
Jeez Gates, you never make life easy, just more frustrating and time wasting
Windows Vista the \"OW\" factor.
